As to the weight, well, I suspect that nature intended him to be chunky, and he spent too long ruthlessly keeping his weight down. Nature always re-asserts itself in the end, but the fact is, some people can totally *own* their own aging, and I always think those people are way cooler than the ones that cling to their youth. But Michael didn't have the self-confidence to do that, I guess that underneath it all was no self-esteem, no pride in anything about himself but good looks, popularity, and fame. Take it from an old fucker, by age fifty you'd better have learned to value other things, because the good looks and the rest of the shallow crap aren't going to stick around.
