He needs to go back to writing fart movies

... starring Will Ferrell.

His big boy movies about finance and politics are muddled and patronizing.

reply

Agreed, his political movies are among the worst directed films to have come out of mainstream Hollywood in recent years. They're all so hideously filmed with their unnecessary camera shake, zooms, and long lenses. If there's one director who needs to go back to film school, it's him.

reply

Patronizing is the best way to describe them.

reply

I'm digging them! Loved Don't Look Up.

I agree. I just bought Winning Time because I stupidly didn’t realize he directed it. Ten minutes in I’m ready to quit. I hate his close ups, his breaking of the fourth wall, pretty much everything about his directing style. But he’s woke so it’s critically acclaimed I’m sure.

reply

Exactly, he's like a poor man's Scorsese wannabe, but with none of the wit, ambiguity, or technical skill of the master present. Whereas Marty uses narration and fourth wall breaks to get us into the characters' mindsets, McKay uses it just to poorly explain plot points and ideas that would've otherwise been better communicated with something visual happening onscreen instead. His movies also constantly beat us over the head with their overbearing, unsubtle messages, and they are all so overloaded with unfunny, overwrought improv as well. He's almost as much of a poor man's Judd Apatow as he is a poor man's Scorsese.

As I said in an earlier response, if there's one living director who honestly needs to go back to film school, it'd be him.

reply

Thank you for expressing this much better than I could have.

Well done.
