I just heard this on NPR. She voluntarily withdrew from the project when there was criticism that the role should go to an actual transsexual performer.

The plot is based on a true story.

I think it's fine if she did it, fine if she doesn't. Not using a trans person in the part is a little uncomfortable, like the producers are saying, "Oh! Here we have a really interesting story about a trans person to show you! We, um...just don't want to show you an actual trans person. Carry on!"
.

" Not using a trans person in the part is a little uncomfortable"

And ticket sales for the film starring an actual tranny will be uncomfortable.

Be that as it may, I don't quite see Ms. Johansson as the person who inspired the story...so it's probably not the best casting, to begin with.

Felicity Huffman was great in TRANSAMERICA and, for all his reported pervyness, Jeffrey Tambor was good on TRANSPARENT... so obviously it's not like the role NEEDS an actual trans person. But as I said, there is something vaguely dodgy about not casting an actual one, as well.

It would have been tough, but I'd have pumped gallons of testosterone into her for the sake of art.

and breast reduction

reply

Absolutely. I would have squeezed her breasts as tightly as possible to reduce their volume. For art.

I think she made the right call. I hope that a trans person is cast instead. I would like to see more roles for transgender actors.

reply

Yeah, she made the right call in the end, backlash nowadays is a lot more difficult for a film. SJWs will feel like they won for their pet weirdos but the irony is none of them have any money to actually see movies.

reply

This movie was gonna make millions of dollars. Now it'll be lucky to get into a theater at all.

reply

^This!

reply

I don't think her fans would buy her in that role, anyway. She's not that versatile.

"Our cultural understanding of [insert gender] people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive."

All it takes folks. :D

Self-identify and whine like heck when it doesn't go your way. Hmm I wonder if the lefty gendered community will find other ways to stop Scarlett from being able to do other roles. I guess there needed to be more backlash when she did GiTS since she wasn't Japanese so she only plays characters to her erm looks/race/hair color?
