Would You Say…..

That he was better known as “Venus Flytrap” from “WKRP in Cincinnati” or as Detective Downtown Brown in “Simon & Simon”? To those who read this what do you consider his most famous role that career wise, he should be known for? I’m curious to see how those of you feel.

reply

Venus was definitely a bigger role of the two.

But where would say the dad from Sister-Sister falls in?

reply

Not very high, I’m afraid. Don’t think that, that show was a major thing for him.

reply

For him I'm sure it was. He was the male lead not a supporting character.

As someone who grew up in the 90s, I'd say you couldn't be more wrong. He was a sitcom dad for many and definitely more well known for that than as a supporting player on a show that has barely been on tv in the last 30 years. Sister, Sister is still shown in refund today and quite popular, while WKRP has long since faded into obscurity.

I’d say you have some valid points. Yes I have underestimated his impact on that show & he was the lead also. Me? No I never watched it but I respect those such as you & PaladinNJ who apparently did. There is a select audience for “Sister, Sister” as well as “WKRP”. But it’s like you said “As someone who grew up in the 90’s” which I didn’t. Maybe that has some bearing on how we all feel, most likely.

I’d still say “WKRP” it’s his most famous one, at least I think but searching the internet believe it or not which may surprise you, much of the consensus is he’s better known for his role on “Simon & Simon” of all things. Kooky, huh?

For me, it's Venus. It's always a pleasure to see him in anything, and I particularly loved his unjustly neglected & forgotten Frank's Place (a true gem of a show) ... but it's Venus who'll always come to mind first.

Here, here, I feel the same way. “KRP” may have faded into obscurity as the show may not be shown any longer, even in syndication but that’s not the point, what was the man known for & like you said he’s still “remembered” for that role, more than anything else, whether the show is currently airing or not. Not that I don’t respect everyone’s take on it, I do. But that’s the ticket, how is he truly remembered & for what.

“Sister, sister” may still be on, “WKRP/Simon & Simon” not but that’s not the how memory works. One can recall someone for what they did, even something you may not have watched or isn’t available more strongly than anything else, it’s how the memory & reputation works. At least I think so. In short, someone can be better associated for what you don’t see….but know, more than that, that you do.

Like I was just writing many of the tv websites I go to rank him higher for “Simon & Simon” & I loved that show when it was on & he believe it or not did as many episodes for that as he did for “WKRP”. It’s all up to debate.
