Great actor.....

Too bad he never got more recognition. Did some great movies before Voyage. Ended up getting mostly remembered for that....

Not many actors can boast they've done both a Fellini film and Little House on the Prairie!

reply

Haha. Yeah. His little house role was great though as the Abusive Teacher....

David Hedison always talked very Fondly of Richard. Apparently they remained great friends after Voyage...

reply

Yes, I remember an interview with Hedison where he said that Basehart could never quite believe that fans liked him and his character so much. Apparently he could sometimes come across as aloof, but that was purely because he was a very shy man. As you say, they remained firm friends.

I only knew him from Voyage which is standard TV fare. It is only fairly recently that I’ve become familiar with his serious dramatic roles on TCM.

Loved Voyage when I was a kid. Later thought it odd a 4-star admiral would ride around in a submarine. I've seen a few movies he was in, but don't recall him specifically. He had a great voice and I know I've heard his narration here and there. The only other thing I remember him from is a Columbo episode where he is a villain.
