Why Has Fat Enabling Become Such A Socially Acceptable Construct?

It's interesting to read some of the comments on here re Bridget's massive weight gain and a number of people feeling the requirement to virtue signal that they wouldn't "fat shame".

But how did we arrive at this juncture, i.e. at this point at which fat enabling seems more socially acceptable than shaming?

Is it simply an unavoidable consequence of capitalism?

i.e. So many companies can make huge profits from people shoveling heaps of cheap, garbage food into their mouths that there necessarily had to be a counter to people describing obese bodies as unhealthy and "grotesque". By this counter being pushed (and with people, the sjw types, thinking they're just signalling / being seen as being positive snowballing the effect) it allows the junk food industry to continue feasting on their profits...

Who else gains? Maybe the healthcare industry also stands to gain very nicely out of this narrative being pushed. Obesity leads to various clinical conditions requiring very expensive treatments.

So, is it really just a free continuation of today's society that we've reached this point of proud, righteous fat enabling or has it cleverly been pushed by those who stand to gain from this weighty issue?

reply

How about because society realized that someone's weight is none of their business.

I don't know what caused someone to be obese. I don't know if they can afford to eat healthy food. Don't tell me that it's cheaper to eat healthy, because it's not, especially with the cost of food these days. I don't know if they have a medical condition. I don't know if they have a mental illness. Depression is a big issue these days. I don't know if they live in their mom's basement, eating fast food and playing video games. I don't know and I don't care.

I'm gonna judge someone a lot harder on how they treat others, than I am what their body looks like.

reply

That reminded me of this brilliant quote;-

"How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can’t even trust his own pants"

reply

And that has to do with anything in this discussion how?

reply

Well, I was thinking of your comment that you'd judge someone more on how they treat others rather than how they treated themself.

And then I thought the quote was "How can I trust a man who can't trust his own stomach" but I was paraphrasing incorrectly. As I realised when I looked the quote up.

But still, it's a fine, funny quote...

reply

But you are making assumptions about obese people. You seem to be judging them on their size and not what is causing it.

So while you seem to think that all obese people are treating themselves poorly, that may not be the case. Someone who treats others poorly and makes assumptions about an entire group of people usually has a choice to be that way. I'm also willing to consider mental illness in that category, but I'm still judging more.

reply

I'm not making assumptions about anything.

In the OP I raised the question of whether fat enabling was a free consequence of social media / virtue signalling among an ever more obese population or whether those who stand to gain have a hand in that.

I think your looking at a different discussion altogether looking into specifics of what causes obesity. Which is fine but just not what I was interested in...

Wtf?!!

Why are you jumping in here with this crap? There are other threads on this very board if you want to involve yourself with this nonsense...

But no, you jump in here with your pathetic upper caps schtick hoping to find a friend to hold your hand? What a joke...

I JUMP WHEREEVER I LIKE....YOUR POST IS FUCKING LAME...IT IS NOT ENABLING...IT IS THE LACK OF SHAMING....IT'S CALLED HAVVING MANNERS AND BEING NICE...TRY IT.

Like I said in the post you felt fit to reply to:-

There are other threads on this very board if you want to indulge yourself in such nonsense.

reply

NOPE....JUST THIS ONE...YOUR POST SUCKS....BE NICE.

reply

Perhaps this is flying over your head, so I'll spell it out for you:-

I'm not being nice or un-nice. I raised a question as to the cause of why fat enabling exists.

Ironically, you seem to have jumped in on that by displaying exactly the type of behaviour I was asking about the CAUSE of. So you are adding absolutely nothing here.

As I said, there are other threads with people arguing the toss - Go there and knock yourself out, instead of trying to force yourself into being centre of attention everywhere.

Now I have nothing further to add here as I have 0% interesting in adding further to your pathetic upper case "shtick"...

Good day to you Sir 👍

YOU ARE BEING RUDE...YES...A DICK IN FACT...YOUR POST IS GARBAGE AS ARE MOST OF THE OPINIONS ECHOED IN THE THREAD....GROW UP....BE NICE....IT ISN'T THAT HARD.

Excellent characterisation of Kowalski, you clearly hit a nerve. He’s a pure narcissist (as well as a predatory homosexual).

😘

Dude this is a movie discussion forum, not a place for gay pick up. I know you’re a predatory homosexual but save that shit for Grinder instead of trying to flirt with men on this site.

Now I want you to answer these paedophile rumours. If it’s true that you are indeed a paedophile I want you to publicly announce it by writing the following text:

Ha!! I like that quote!

reply

Yeah, it's a great quote from a great film!

reply

Nothing wrong with some good old fat shaming

reply

That's what happens when we start pretending that it's possible or desirable to be "non-judgmental", rather than having uncomfortable conversations about which judgments are sane, wise, and beneficial to both self and civilization at large

THIS POST IS SHIT...A LOT OF WORDS FOR YOU TO FEEL GOOD ABOUT YOURSELF BY INSULTING OTHERS....DO BETTER.🙂

Nobody on earth is attracted to fat fucks. The people who claim they are, are simply fragile egos who know that tubs of lard are easer to hang onto than the in-shape humans they secretly covet.

Bridget Fonda suffered severe back injuries in a car accident, and quit acting soon after. Whatever choices, trauma even, she made are her business. Just because she was cast as a hot character back in the 90s doesn’t mean she owes it to the world to stay hot forever. It’s more sad to see actresses go the botox and surgery route than to see someone just move on and decide to retreat from their celebrity status and live a private life. It’s not like she is out there promoting herself right now. In every photo, she is just trying to go about her daily life like any other person.

reply

I can't speak for fat shaming. I can speak about Bridget because one has been interested in her story.

I don't think anyone, let alone a celebrity who will be consistently photographed, should let themselves go like that.

Bridget, someone I thought was really attractive in the 1990s, showed up in 2022 looking like a completely different person. And let's keep in mind, all the way up until 2009, she still looked fine. She shows up again in 2022 looking 30-40 years older, 60-70 pounds heavier, to the point at first, one thought her 2022 pics were a hoax.

There has been talk of a car accident which left her taking medication that caused the weight gain. I don't know, I suppose this could be true. But I must say, to me, it reeks more of laziness. I happen to also be in my 50s. It'd be real easy to quit, sit home, take pills, eat day and night and do nothing. Or, you can get up every day and work out. Move around; keep yourself physically active. Sad to say, I think Bridget, very simply, let herself go.

reply

“There’s been talk of a car accident…”. Guess you don’t have much access to the internet.

I had seen around Moviechat boards that she had been in a car accident. Unfortunately I didn't have the time to sit around, scour the internet, and read every exact detail of what happened. I see the accident occurred 21 years ago. Thankfully you do have the time to scour the internet and check every detail. Hey thanks for confirming what I already knew.

reply

I think this diverges from the question I was raising but is also an interesting one.

Bridget Fonda is clearly no longer an active film star but to what extent can someone who's made their living (maybe not Bridget per se due to the nepotism angle) reasonably expect to be shielded from public curiosity?

reply

Hello and thanks for the reply. First I have to say, nepotism I'm sure did help - but I believe Bridget could stand on her own. I was a big fan of hers in the 1990s. I'm sure nepotism opened doors, but she still had to perform. Basically what I'm saying is I think she is a good actress.

Ok, I reread what you wrote. Yeah, living here in the good old USA - we can all sit around and get fat (especially if you don't have to work anymore). What probably happened, and its a crappy thing to say - plus Im not fat shaming - is Bridget got lazy. I'm not putting her down, she can do as she pleases. I can only say I'm no one, and like Bridget, in my 50s, and like Bridget, I don't have to work. However, I'm just as committed to physical fitness now as I was when I first started in my teens. ANd I'm nobody. No one cares what I look like. Bridget would have to know, whenever she left her home, someone would figure it out and start taking pics of her.

So, why would she let herself go like that? To me it reeks of laziness. Possibly depression. I don't know - what do you think? WHy would Bridget Fonda, in a matter of 13 years - completely let herself go???

reply

To be honest, it's been a long time since I saw a Bridget Fonda film, so I can't really recall if she was great or not. I was more mentioning the nepotism thing as she would have money either way, and been in the spotlight regardless, rather than someone who'd purely played the game game and then decided they deserved to be left in peace.

I think I would have fully agreed with your outlook re personal fitness up until maybe two or three years ago. I'm not quite as old as you but I got really in to fitness / running and managed to become reasonably good. I couldn't understand the mindset of those who were out of shape and one thing I really hated was hearing some comments around female athletes shouldn't be weight pressured.

I thought that was absurd as, even at my comparatively lower level, I saw in my own results there is quite definitely a body fat to endurance performance inverse ratio at play... But society's reasoning is that you shouldn't be able to say anything about that, even although it's clear sports science and male competitors have always been subject to the same scrutiny.

But having said that, following a few annoying injuries, COVID maybe playing a part, age, etc I'm finding it harder myself. Not at the point of giving up / becoming portly but I can see now how , for some, it wouldn't become hard to throw in the towel / give up. It's not laziness as such I'm talking here but potential body pain...

As to Bridget herself, I'm not sure. I did speculate in another thread here:-
https://moviechat.org/nm0000403/Bridget-Fonda/61f660d567a1261b9c815811/Danny-Elfman-is-a-pretty-ugly-guy-Did-he-facilitate-this

that maybe it could have linked in with her husband not being a particularly stunning looking chap (another thing you aren't supposed to be able to "see" these days). Is It possible they had kids and after years of pressure to be in shape for certain roles, she's with a guy, not particularly attractive / physically fit, and she thought "Well, if he's not bothered why should I?"...

reply

Ok gotcha. Yeah true, Bridget could have never left the house for her entire life and she'd have been fine (due to being a Fonda). It does turn out though, IMO, she is a good actress. Not great, but good. She starred in two of my fave 90s films - "Single White Female" and "Point of No Return". If you please, check em out and see what you think.

Yeah, it gets harder with the physical fitness as you get older. What you do is make adjustments. But you keep yourself in motion, one way or another. Certainly what you do is up you - but I would encourage you to maintain some kind of physical fitness regiment in your life.

Some, and I gather Bridget falls into this crew - never bothered with exercising. If this is the case, you really have problems. Because I don't care who you are, you start pushing 50 - those pounds are going to start to show. Bridget had the car accident in 2003, had a kid in 2005. But four years later, if you look at 2009 pics of her - she still looks fine. She still looks like Bridget Fonda. By 2013 shes pushing 50 years old - and quite possibly, she still didn't do a thing fitness wise - but now, the pounds started adding up. Hence, we see her in 2022, at 58 years old, looking like a different person.

So, and these are just hypotheses on my part, she never worked out - it finally caught up to her in her 50s. And to add, totally agreed with you - look at her live in partner/hubby. This is what she's looking at night and day. To put it mildly, not the most cosmetic fellow in the world.

As you say, and I agree, if your spouse looks like that - there isn't much inspiration to keep yourself tip top.

I don't think any sort of conspiracy is afoot. People just don't want to be mean, don't want to sound mean, and they want to protect others who they see as victims of this type of meanness.

I'm sure most of us have experienced a micro-version of this in our daily lives. I've had girls complain about getting fat to me before, for instance, and if they are fat, it puts me in a very awkward position. Because I know that I really have only a few options: I can either agree, disagree (lie), or try to artfully get out of this conversation (which is my usual go-to). If I agree, even in the most tactful, delicate, and sympathetic way, chances are as high as her cholesterol that her feelings are going to be hurt. And I really don't want to have that effect on someone. The easier, safer option, is to just say complimentary things like "I like a little meat on the bones", or "You're beautiful just the way you are," or some other such thing that, while it may enable her problem, will make her feel better in the short-term and make me look more caring and sympathetic to others.

We're a social species and an abundance of empathy is a big part of that, so we're usually inclined to bend over backward to nurture and protect those we perceive as vulnerable or underdogs (fat people, in this instance) and to do whatever it takes to make them feel better and to make ourselves look better to others.

That empathy, though, is a double-edged sword. Those impulsive feelings can blind us to what's most rational or effective. Not just with this topic, but with tons of topics. We'd rather coddle our young, for instance, because we want to protect them from outside dangers; even though that very coddling, in the long-term, causes them more problems in the future. People just don't instinctively think this stuff out, I don't believe. The most natural impulse is to prioritize short-term emotional comfort over long-term solutions. So that's the accepted norm.
