Overrated?

Pretty much every single movie of his I've seen I consider to be overrated. Not saying they're all bad, some are great but he's one of those directors who I don't understand all the acclaim for.

His work I've seen;

Alien3 (1992) - Can't remember this one to well, it's been a long time since I've seen it but I recall always prefering the first two over it by a considerable distance.

Seven (1995) - Good movie, maybe his best but still a bit overrated.

Fight Club (1999) - Good movie but definitely overrated by 'movie bros'.

Zodiac (2007) - Long, boring and Arthur Leigh Allen was not the Zodiac killer so minus points for presenting him as the killer.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) - Long, boring... I don't get the hype, it's just meandering nothingness.

Gone Girl (2014) - Decent movie but I don't understand whats so good about it outside of having a sinister and detestable villainess.

I'm considering checking out The Social Network but I'm not getting my hopes up.

Seven, Fight Club and Zodiac are his best works and those movies alone make him the greatest American director of the last three decades...

The Game is also quite nice, but not as good as those three. And Panic Room, which I think is quite underrated. You should check them also.

The Social Network and Benjamin Button weren't that interesting movies and sadly he was hijacked by Netflix soon after them, so can't comment his most recent movies, because I have not seen them.

The only drawback of his directorial style that I can come up is that he edits his movies too fast, especially conversation scenes. That's primary reason why it took me almost ten years and several attempts before I could finish The Social Network.

Seven and Fight Club are definitely his best work and I like them quite a bit but I do think they're a bit overrated given the fact they're the 20th and 13th highest rated movies on IMDb. I wouldn't disagree with them being in the top 250 but the top 20 is a bit high for me personally.

I disliked Zodiac, I have an interest in true crime including the zodiac case so I may be biased as I didn't like the fact the film seemed to present ALA as the zodiac killer when I think he definitely wasn't.

Top 20 is realistic. It’s that good. IMDB listings are from viewers. Now some of these movies on this IMDB list are good but not better than others.

This movie dominates critics’ lists as well.

“Seven is now regarded as one of the best thriller, crime, and mystery films ever made. Some publications have listed Seven among the greatest films of all time. A 2014 poll of 2,120 entertainment industry professionals by The Hollywood Reporter ranked Seven the eighty-fifth-best film of all time.” There are more.

Seven and Fight Club should be higher on the IMDb ranking. There are movies up there that shouldn't be, like Shawsank Redemption or The Dark Knight.

Just curious, why do you think that Arthur Leigh Allen was not the Zodiac killer. Personally, I think he did not perform all the Zodiac murders.

Se7en is one of the best movies with the best ending of any movie. For me the weakest was The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. He’s excellent. Definitely not overrated. His movies have an edge. Also, Mindhunter is one of the best TV series.

I HAVE TO AGREE HERE...I ENJOY ALL HIS MOVIES...BUT NONE OF THEM ARE FAVORITES...THE SOCIAL NETWORK IS THE ONE I HAVE REWATCHED THE MOST...OTHER THAN ALIEN3...CHARLES S DUTTON IS BADASS IN ALIEN3.

The Social Network was really good, and I liked it better than all of the movies you listed except maybe Seven. With that said, there are several directors whose work I like better than Fincher's.

Seven and Fight Club are really good (though not worth rewatching). Alien 3 is really good. Rest suck.

Nope.

Any director with Seven, Fight Club, Zodiac and Social Network on their C.V can't be called overrated.
