Was True Lies his swan song?

Looking back, it seems like True Lies is the unofficial bookend to Arnold's glory years. Sure, he made movies after that, but they were pretty forgettable. Then cinema changed immensely while he was away. I'm a diehard fan of his, like the majority of his remaining fanbase, I grew up on his movies and loved his unrelenting bravado and machismo. I've paid for and went and saw all of his "comeback" movies of the last 4-5 years and... it's just not the same. The old-man-kicking-butt schtick had already been worn thin before he even got back into movies.

On a side note, I wish he'd give it a rest with these bad dye-jobs. The older he gets the more ridiculous he looks. He had a good look in Sabatoge, with the greying shortcropped hair, he should go with that look in real life.

he barely did anything in the expendables series

1994 was his last best year like Jackie Chan (Drunken Master II) and Jet Li (Fist of Legend).

Some might not agree but I thought Eraser was on par with True Lies and was really good. I will admit his later movies though enjoyable aren't as high in quality as those.

Yes. He had a couple of mildly good ones afterwards, but 'True Lies' was definitely his last great one as an action star.

EDIT: But if there's one thing I know about Arnie, it's that you can never give up on him. The man doesn't know how to lose. He's hasn't really been much of an actor in the past; more of an ideal or a presence, but I can imagine him reinventing himself in his old age as a legitimate dramatic actor, and amazing people all over again. If he sets his mind to it, he'll find a way to have a comeback.

This was the last movie he looked good in. I noticed him looking like an old timer in Eraser and Jingle All The way.

Not just appearance but the way he moved.

You can't be an action star if things like running look cumbersome and risky for you.

reply

Yeah, Arnold started moving around like he got in a car accident.

I'd take it all the way to 6th Day in 2000. Eraser is as good as his early work like Raw Deal or Red Heat, Jingle is a solid comedy for him, his performance in Batman & Robin is simply hilarious and the only time he's ever made a big dumb larger than life studio tentpole like that, End of Days is what it is and 6th Day is a solid scifi film, though easily his weakest. All these movies pretty much played into the Arnold formula. Collateral Damage might be better than I remember. I only sat through it once. After that it was all politics and cashing in on nostalgia. So much as I love True Lies, there's some seriously draggy bits in that movie. It's far from a perfect picture. Peak Arnold checked out with T2.

Eh, I don’t think he really took any chances with his career that afforded him much else. He should have played the villain in more movies, and he should have followed up with Predator sequels.
