She hasn't had a bad career

For a while there she didn't go wrong for me until probably end of the 90's, sure not everything she did was great during that time (she was miscast in Dracula imo, she wasn't very good in Alien Resurrection and films like Great balls of Fire, Boys and 1969 don't quite hit the spot) but she has more hits then misses. Films like Heathers, Beetlejuice, The Crucible, Edward Scissorhands, Girl interrupted, Little Women, Reality Bites, The Age of innocence, Night On Earth, Mermaids, The House of spirits and Lucas. That's not a bad C.V for someone who wasn't even 30 by the time 90's ended.

Once the 00's hit that's when it started to get a little more miss then hit, that 2001 bust didn't do her any good. Still you can still find some gems in there before her Stranger Things comeback, she was excellent in Black Swan, A Scanner Darkly is one of her best, The private Lives of Pippa Lee is underrated, Turks and Caicos she was great in.

Overall her career isn't actually that bad.

A few things happened to Winona Ryder’s career the ultimately lead to her losing her stature as a Hollywood leading lady:

She Aged: By 1999 Winona Ryder was nearly 30 years old and was nearing the age that many actresses find their careers at a crossroads. No longer are they young enough to play “ingenue” roles and yet not yet old enough for “matronly” roles, and find that there is a lack of roles for them to play. She reached the height of her fame in 1988 when she was teenager (approximately 17–18) and by 1999 she was nearing the point of her career that she was fading out of popularity.

She Had Too Many Flops: Although she was once a critical darling and had starred in some movies that were box office smashes, by 2004 she had starred in just as many dismal failures and was beginning to develop a reputation as not being able to carry a film. Among the notable box office or critical flops she had were “The Crucible”, “Girl Interrupted” (against a budget of only 40 million it made a mere 48 million and change, a modest success but not a smash); “Boys”, “Autumn In New York”, “Lost Souls” and “Mr. Deeds.”

She Shoplifted: Winona had always had a fairly clean reputation, and wasn’t known for being a wild child or acting inappropriately, so it came as a bit of a shock when an otherwise “good girl” was suddenly in the news for something criminal. In 2001, Winona Ryder was charged with shoplifting in Beverly Hills after she was caught stealing 5,000 dollars worth of clothes from Saks Fifth Avenue. She was also accused during trial of using various drugs without a prescription and speculation in the press turned to Winona having a serious drug problem (speculation that was never confirmed and was seemingly nothing more than press creating rumors).

lol

trust TMC to give us a TMZ spin on it.

I agree with the OP, Ryder's career is nothing to be ashamed of. I have a lot of time for her.

And what, we're suppose to suddenly ignore the shoplifting incident and the absolutely negative impact that it had on Winona's career!?

Yeah I kind of lost respect after the shoplifting incident. She just fell into the wayward, lost celebs like Britney Spears and Lindsey Lohan. Robert Downey Jr overcame his sketch to be a respected actor again but he is really talented.

reply

Absolutely we are. It was a small indiscretion and it has already been discussed to death over 20 years. We know it had an impact on her career but dwelling on it now seems tacky to me.

If you think she deserved the damage to her career then by all means continue flogging this dead horse. I prefer to think of all the times she lit up the screen through my youth and look forward to what she might do in the future.

reply

My point is people with talent can overcome indiscretions, like RD Jr. However Ryder’s career peaked in the ‘90s and kind of fell apart after the *indiscretion*.

She is in The Plot Against America and doing an average job in a supporting role. I noticed her tone and delivery are wooden on some lines.

Why did Winona Ryder ‘Vanish’ from Hollywood for over a decade?

https://www.quora.com/Why-did-Winona-Ryder-Vanish-from-Hollywood-for-over-a-decade/answer/Jon-Mixon-1

She didn’t.

Ryder has consistently appeared and consistently performed on television and in feature films since her debut in 1986. While she wasn’t always the leading female actor in her roles, she has always managed to snag a memorable role in the films in which she acted. So it’s not as if she had years of downtime between projects or was forced to lower her profile due to major scandal.

Why isn’t she a bigger star?

Hmmm….

reply

Damn crime we didn't get a 90s romcom with her.

We didn't what now?

reply

Man, this movie whack as F. I wouldn't consider this a romcom at all.

reply

I want a movie about good looking successful people from the 80s making love in the 90s.

reply

Reality Bites is a shit show experimental moody garbage film that helped spawn millennials. God damn Ben Stiller. F that movie.

reply

Have you seen Flirting with Disaster?

reply

Hmmm... I probably have but don't remember. Definitely gonna check it out. Love both them girls.

reply

Well it's a comedy and it's romantic, so.....

Personally I'm glad she never went down the Sleepless in Seattle route. She was always cooler than that sappy shit.

By the way, the shoplifting incident happened in 2001 so she was robbed of nothing in the 90s.

reply

She was whatever Harvey Weinstein wanted her to be.

OK
