What if there was no Stephen King?

What do you think would be the state of horror fiction in the '80s and '90s if King had never come upon the scene?

reply

We probably would have seen more Dean Koontz movies/show adaptations of his works. But I think the horror genre would have suffered without King. People assume that if theres a vacuum it must always be filled, but king had to work hard to become the household name he is now. The guy was turned down over a hundred times by book publishers saying "he's not good enough"...STEPHEN KING, not good enough? It sounds bizarre but it truly happened.

My favorite movie of his is Cats Eye. But Misery and Dreamcatcher among many others are highly rated by myself as well.

Children wouldn't be afraid of clowns, dolls, ghosts, dogs, cars....etc. Not in the way they are now.

I'd have a dozen or so hours back that I spent reading a couple of his ho-hum novels.

Life’s too short to slog through ho-hum novels. I’ve closed bad books part-way through and never reopened then plenty of times.

You're right. But I have this compulsive thing about finishing stuff I've started. Got to work on that.

No Pennywise the Dancing Clown, for a start! Oh, I couldn't bear that!

reply

A different writer would have taken his place.
