Trivia: True Lies

Just heard interesting story:
James Cameron actually called Heston personally to offer him the role of the boss in True Lies. When Heston asked why, Cameron's response was: I needed someone who can intimidate Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Pretty funny story but even if true nobody was intimidating Arnold. It wasn’t the impressive physique but the mind and will power Arnold had that made him a superstar. He is a clever fellow, nobody’s fool.

He didn’t start out as an immigrant long shot destined to become one of our most famous movie stars and a Governor of an enormous U.S. State by being pushed around. The man was unstoppable. He would have chucked Heston over the fence.

Charlton Heston has a small role in this film as an authority figure. He was good as a scary older man.

You are right generally. Arnold may not have been "intimidated" in the film but his character was certainly aware that his team mission was a screw up and Heston was dressing down his character. Tom Arnold too as I recall.

There are three performances of the "angry old man" that impressed me. Charlton Heston in this film. James Coburn in Affliction. Patrick McGoohan in Braveheart.

Old, but still quite formidable. Any others?

One will always wonder why they never made a follow up to TRUE LIES?? If it was a product of it's time and ways or what and perhaps wouldn't work let's say in modern day??

reply

They tried recently to reboot as a series. IT FLOPPED!

reply

I presume no heavyweight names like Arnold or Cameron. No wonder it flopped.
