I've never gone fishing before myself, but I know the really basic setup. Make sure the rod is working, thread the line properly, put bait on the hook, pull back, aim, let her fly, and then wait. Kinda boring, but important for some people, if fishing is their livelihood (though usually these days they do net-fishing to catch fish in larger numbers).

I’ll tell you about a way of fishing that’s a lot of fun. You can make a trot line, which is done with a couple hundred feet of heavy twine with #2 sized hooks staged out at about every 5 feet. You can find a tree in the water close to the bank and reach down a couple of feet, to tie the end, so no one knows it’s there. Then string it across the river and tie it the same in the other side. Mark the tree so you can find it at night and tie a brick in the middle so the line sinks to the bottom in the middle of the river. This also keeps boat props and fishermen from snagging it. I use a cast net to catch shad, which are shiny and stinky, to bait the hooks with. The rivers I put them in are wide enough for about 25 hooks on a line. If you have a current those silvery shad will be bouncing around on the bottom. I bait as the sun is going down and check them about every 2 hours throughout the night.

It’s lots of fun because when you check them at night you never know what or how many you might have on the line. Catfish in Louisiana can grow to be really big.
