Is living in Hawaii worth it?

Would you live there?

If I was rich enough to live comfortably there... I wouldn't. I'd just visit when I felt like it, and spread my visits between the islands.

Each island is quite small, a tourist can cover any of the major islands in a week. I just like more room to move around in.

I think I could live full time on Oahu, but not the smaller islands.

It's a nice place to visit, but unless you're rich, you wouldn't want to live there.

It's very expensive because over half the resources to keep the economy going over there have to be flown in by cargo planes or brought in by cargo ships. The islands themselves were never able to support large populations before white people showed up.

Local Hawaiians can either be nice, or racist towards white people, depending on who you talk to. Many are poor and/or homeless, and many live on welfare. What's even worse is, white people are having a harder and harder time getting jobs because the local infrastructure is run by people who want local Hawaiians working at places like police and fire-fighters, but most native Hawaiians are too poor to go to trade school or police academy for that, so there's a deliberate shortage of people who can help there.

I've also heard of something called "Trapped Island Madness" or something like that. People who want to leave the islands to go anywhere, whether it be on vacation, business trips, or to move, have to go through a TON of paperwork and it drives them insane the longer they wait.

Yeah, I don't think I could live in such an isolated place. Hell, Alaska is better. And I like the cold.

You sound like a tough enough guy for that place :) The people there are more wholesome too. The only parts that kinda sucks are, you spend a lot on propane to keep your house warm and you need a gun to deal with the animal pests that sometimes come to cause problems. Other than that, I think you could easily handle whatever challenges the state would have to offer. Plus, the outdoors activities look like fun, whether it's winter or summer.

Too warm.

Too soon?

Signed, million man.

I know two people who lived in Hawaii for a while and had similar experiences. It was 'paradise' at first. But then the high cost of living started to add up. One person lived in Hilo (on the Big Island) and didn't realize it rained so much there.
