Can someone explain the Ending of the Shining

No he wasn’t a ghost the whole movie.

I don’t know why they had him in the picture. I don’t recall that part being in the book.

Because it was creepy that he was in a very old photo. He had been there before in a previous life.

Not a ghost. He was a reincarnation.

There's a discussion in The Shining Discussion. My reply was:

"The ending is confusing, but it makes sense if you watch the movie closely.

Delbert Grady was the butler in the 1920s. His reincarnation is Charles Grady, the 1970s caretaker, who kills his own family.

Jack 2 is the present caretaker in the 1980s who is a reincarnation of Jack 1 who was caretaker during the 1920s. Jack is told that he was always caretaker by Delbert Grady who worked there during the 1920s with him. It's confirmed at the end when we see Jack 1 in the 1921 photo."

Since I've not read the book (at least not that I can recall), I assumed that every victim claimed by the hotel gets added to the photo because they're subsumed into the permanence and timelessness of the place. By being treated like they've always been a guest there, it almost erases the real world from their memories so that they remain completely loyal and fixed on the hotel's wishes, kinda like a hive mind.
