Has anyone thought how between the years 1999 and 2000 happened this phenomenon that 80s and 70s music artists were able to get new youngster fans.
These artists im gonna mention took a great opportunity to get the hearts of the millennials…
Madonna with Music
U2 with Beautiful Day
Bon Jovi with it’s My Life
Aerosmith with I don’t wanna miss a thing
Cher with Belive
Celine Dione with my heart will go on
between those years( 1999 and 2000) the 80s stars I mentioned and probably even older decade stars were huge in mainstream radio stations. They were able to go toe to toe with new big music stars like Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera.
It’s like the music industry gave the older stars to get one last big chance to get a new fandom.
After that they got maybe two or 3 more fans but it felt like getting late to the party.
Part of that surge was about musical videos with CGI, especially with Madonna. Dione made it big from the early 90s perhaps. One year only (1999-2000) is too small a sample to analyse.
One reason why your post is valid though, is because of the way the music industry works these days. Older stars like Lionel Richie, Elton John, Pearl Jam have been producing music. It's just that they are not being marketed to heavy listeners or young people.
Exactly that was part of my point how in the past mainstream radio stations did play older singers music and those older singers were able to get a big new generational fandom in the millennials
Late 90s early 2000s older musicians were still cool for younger crowds but that didn’t last.
I remember how in 2006 when I was like the biggest Madonna fan ( you know if like you talked about Madonna I would have thrown something at you lol 😂 ) I remember getting into forums and fans were angry radio stations didn’t play Hung up.
So that’s why I specified that the good days for older stars stayed till 2001 probably it stretched to 2002 but by 2004. The mainstream radio stations closed the doors to older artists.
So True about Spotify killing the radio star and the sad thing is that I love Spotify. It’s honestly really cool for us listeners to have all our music in an App
Though it makes me feel really sad for artists, I wished this comfortability didn’t come with the sacrifice of no more radio stars or our favorite singers or bands having to look for other media to make money.
Just like sometimes I wished the movie star era didn’t end either but sadly streaming killed the movie star or franchises killed the movie star who knows.
Not surprised. Pretty cool years no ?
It was like having the 80s in the new millennium but not in a nostalgic way but in a way that those stars of the past brought something interesting for new generations of fans.
The same thing happened in the 1980s when all these 1970s stars who had faded from the spotlight made comebacks and attained more popularity that they had in their original time. Phil Collins, Peter Gabriel, Tina Turner, Yes, David Bowie, Aerosmith, Quiet Riot and many more 70s stars and bands experienced a huge renaissance in the 1980s.
I like all their eras.
I think Aerosmith is band that has been constantly great during all their good years. Every decade they were relevant every decade they did great.
The grunge bands were inspired by a lot of 70's band's so bands like Ramones and Cheap Trick got a lift. Johnny Cash covered a Nine Inch Nails song and did well from it.
