Movies set against some kind of culture or sub culture but that culture doesn't matter?

I recently tried re-watching the film "Singles" from 1992, I couldn't make it all the way through it's a bad film.

What made me want to re watch it though is the grunge bands of the era and the soundtrack being a part of it. The odd thing about the film though is despite having Grunge feature prominently most of the characters in the film are yuppie types and look out of place in the bars where the bands are playing and even Bridget Fonda's character who is dating a Grunge band member is out of place in that environment.

So it made me wonder if there are other films which centre around some kind of culture or sub culture but in the end that setting really doesn't matter because the characters and/or story line doesn't really involve the setting?

Green Room (2015)

Not really about punk rock?

reply

It's about punk band that's being held captive by white supremacists.

I really liked that movie!
And look at Patrick Harris being all mean and scary.

He was great as the bad guy.

reply

You mean Patrick Stewart?

reply

Ha!
Indeed I did, how the the hell did I screw that up?!?

Don’t worry, if I’m getting dementia l’ll never forget you😄

reply

I thought you were referring to some obscure actor named Patrick Harris who played a henchman in the film.

reply

No, simply a rare case of me fucking up😆

When “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” was originally playing at the theater there was a TV commercial for it where they crossed out the word Greek in the title and replaced it with a dozen different ethnicities and nationalities to emphasize it was a universal story.

reply

Except for the parts where the Greek father talks about how every English word comes from Greek. I have met a lot of Greeks who will say things like that and point out things Greeks came up with centuries ago.

reply

YUP...MY FATHER IN LAW WAS EXACTLY LIKE THE FATHER IN THE MOVIE..."GREEK IS BEST"..."THE GREEK DO IT FIRST"..."THAT'S THE STORY"...HE WAS AN FUNNY GUY.

reply

nearly all sci fi movies.

Generally the story could be done without the scifi element
