Have you ever had a pomelo?
I had never seen nor even heard of pomelos until a couple of months ago when I saw them for the first time at my local grocery store. They looked like overgrown grapefruit, and since I knew that grapefruit are a hybrid, I figured that pomelos were probably a new hybrid. It turns out that they're not a hybrid; they're one of the "parents" of the grapefruit, so they've been around since forever.
So why are they suddenly showing up around here now? Why haven't they always been available here? Grapefruit have always been available here, and it seems that any place you could sell grapefruit you could also sell pomelos.
I just tried one for the first time and they taste very similar to a grapefruit; a little less sour and a little less bitter. They're not as big on the inside as you might expect, since their rind is about twice as thick as a typical grapefruit's, so the edible portion isn't much, if any, more than you get with a large grapefruit.
