Did you enjoy the Garfield comic strip?

Was a big fan as a kid but I kinda outgrew it.

I had some Garfield books as a kid. I also lost interest as I got older.

reply

Innovative when it started, but became calculated & predictable very quickly.

When I was like 5 or 6 i liked those Garfield books that came from the comic strip I suppose. After that, Calvin and Hobbes took it's place and that is still great today.

reply

Maybe 40 years ago I did!

reply

It makes me chuckle sometimes, unlike Calvin and Hobbes which makes me laugh out loud a lot!

reply

I didn't like the strip but loved the Saturday morning series and specials.

reply

I did until he became a mean dick.

Yes, Garfield was kind of like "comfort food" for me. I think the late 80s/early 90s had some outstanding comic strips ("Cathy," "Bloom County," "Calvin and Hobbes"--which a couple of posters already mentioned--and "The Far Side"), but I still enjoyed "Garfield" and "Peanuts" also.

reply

I wonder why it was called "Peanuts".

I heard the story of this a couple of months ago and had never heard it until then! Apparently, Charles Schultz originally titled his strip "Li'l Folks," but the "powers that be" thought it was too similar to "Li'l Abner" (Now there's an old-time comic strip that was still appearing in newspapers when I was a kid...that and "Nancy," "Alley Oop," "The Phantom," "Andy Capp," et.al.). They called it "Peanuts," because "Peanuts" was a well-known slang term for"little kids" back in the day. The rest is history.
