What did you watch this week troops? (01/22-01/28)

Another busy week for me but I managed to fit it in some cool action flicks and a good romcom, check it out!

Snake eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021 Blu-Ray): This movie got a lot of hate. Like, A LOT! Well I feel like I am standing in the middle of a bitter crowd of angry people and I’m screaming: “I like you Snake, dry your Eyes!” No but for real, this movie is action packed, it looks cool and the story is secondary so who cares if it has few plot holes? My main complaint would be that, even if entertaining, the fight scenes are not very original, inspired or unique. Good standard action movie. Oh and yes, the last minute ended very abruptly and we saw his suit for 5 seconds… not SUCH a big deal. My rating: 6.5/10

Bleeding steel (2017 TV): It was fun to see my favourite actor, Jackie Chan, star in a movie that has his typical action and comedy style but this time with a twist of sci-fi and a touch of gore. I kinda want to add this movie to my Jackie Chan DVD collection. (Side note: if you thought Snake Eyes had a preposterous script, stay away from this one let me tell y’a!! Ha! At least the fights are more creative) My rating: 7/10

Boss level (2020 DVD): Now this action sci-fi has a fun concept (we’ve seen this kind of story before and it had plot holes but still, fun), it has jokes and it has a Frank Grillo in a good form like never before. The rest of the cast is good too but the bad guys characters were underdeveloped. Oh and, another movie that ends abruptly. My rating: 7/10

It could happen to you (1994 TV): Is there a simpler, sweeter, nicer 90’s romcom out there? I doubt it. I remember seeing this with my parents, I was very young and gave 0 fucks about it. Way more appreciated as an adult and a highly positive experience. My rating: 7.5/10

Ahoy there, Sargent StoneKeeper! I've managed to squeeze some viewings in as well!

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins (2021) - Passable schlock without enough slickness to justify already thin story and characterization. 5.5

It Could Happen to You (1994) - How can anyone not enjoy this amiable pairing of Nic Cage and Bridget Fonda? 8

My watches this week:

Poker Face (2023 TV) - After viewing the first handful of episodes, it's pretty apparent that this show would fit snugly into a mid-2000s USA Network lineup. Natasha Lyonne plays a character who can tell whether or not a person is lying. This premise lends itself to a fun and effective mystery of the week. 8

Paul T. Goldman (2023 TV) - Finished the final episodes, and this is a fascinating docu-series with many layers. 7.5

Miracle Beach (1992 Tubi) - A supremely intriguing film because it plays out like a coke-fueled boner comedy that was somehow released about five years past its sell by date. A hapless loser (Dean Cameron) stumbles on a magic lamp containing a perky genie (Ami Dolenz) who unyieldingly grants his wishes to make good with a materialistic aspiring model/actress (Felicity Waterman).
...
At least 85% of this movie takes place on the beach. Pat Morita appears in this movie just frequently enough that he seems like he's going to deliver a zinger or provide a poignant monologue at the end of a scene, but more often than not the movie uses him to provide an approving nod or a bemused smirk when the editing calls for a cutaway. Martin Mull makes the most of his minor screen time to be sure. 7

Pazucus: Island of Vomit and Despair (2017) - Where has this movie been all this time? A lovely gonzo nightmare. 6

Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (2017 Video Game) - A rip-roaring adventure with witty banter and lots of action to spare. Would that more games went for this sort of pulpy appeal. Could've varied its environments, but at the same time the story benefits from the more focused scope. 8

With a -40 degrees Celsius here today, Miracle beach would be a good pick to watch! I’ll add it to my list but I have another of your recommendations that I want to watch on tubi: Corridor of mirrors.

Can I suggest that next week you watch Outlaws and Angels on Tubi? I am curious what would be your review for it.

My 8 years old son started the very first Uncharted on PS4 this very week. It looks good.

reply

Outlaws and Angels looks worth checking out. I'll give it a watch!

And yes, the whole Uncharted series is like playing the lead in an Indiana Jones-style blockbuster.

YOURS

It could happen to you (1994): I have a vague memory of the movie but I remember liking it.

reply

👍

reply

Don't worry, I am going to watch one movie today.

reply

Have you picked which one?

Tonight I am watching Wakanda forever with my boys!

reply

Yes, but I want it to be a surprise :)

I can say two things:

1. It's new movie (which is rare for me)
2. Pick this movie only because I like the director.

reply

Yes, Sir!

I haven't seen any of yours, although I'd like to watch Bleeding Steel. I don't think I've seen anything from Jackie Chan since 'Around the World in 80 Days' (2004)!

This week I watched:
Finished SE21 of Family Guy. Not the best of all of them, but did not disappoint. 8/10

Hit and Run (2012): This also has pretty bad reviews here on the MC board, but I actually enjoyed it. It had a good amount of both action and romance, although not really well balanced. But some of the scenes with Bradley Cooper were laugh-out-loud funny! 6/10

reply

I thought hit and run was pretty good. I saw it in the cinema when it first came out.

reply

If you plan to catch up with Chan’s flicks since 2004, I strongly suggest you don’t start with Bleeding steel! Not a very good movie lol! I just happen to like that kind of stuff.

Hit and Run: I agree with you. Did you know the leads are a married in real life? 6/10

reply

I found out about it way back, but forgot since. But their dialogue in the opening scene was more than revealing. :)
"And if you want I'll spend every moment with you for the rest of your life."

and then:
"You're so terrible on the eyes. I don't know why I share a bed with you! You're disgusting!"

lol, that sounds like a married couple right there.

Chariots of Fire (1982) - first time viewing since 1982. love the feel good nature of this movie. i thought the theme song was played throughout the movie but it is only played at the beginning and ending. the beach running scene would be cgi crap today. 7.5/10

Larceny (1948) - a film noir i have never seen with john payne (the poor man's humphrey bogart). a familiar film noir plot where a man falls for a woman he is suppose to ripoff. i like it and it meets the 7/10 standard.

The Tall Men (1955) - a western i have never seen with clark gable and robert ryan. ryan is sort of wasted in this movie. cameron mitchell is the best character playing gable's troubled brother. i love all the cattle that was use in this movie. the movie is weak with jane russell adding some tame titillation by showing some leg. 6/10

The Keys of the Kingdom (1944) - an underrated gem, you just have to look beyond how the catholic church looks today compared to 1944. this is a very moving film with gregory peck at his stoic best. 7/10

Good stuff old man! I haven’t seen them old movies. 🤷‍♂️

Hello, hello!

Snake eyes: G.I. Joe Origins 5/10
Boss level 6/10
It could happen to you 6/10

I watched:

The Good Nurse 2022 7/10 This was fairly interesting and I think Chastain and Redmayne did a good job.

Murder, He Says 1945 6/10 Fred MacMurray is good, but the film is just mediocre.

The French Sex Murders 1972 6/10 Not very good. It's messy and much of it doesn't work. A couple fun moments.

Fire of Love 2022 8/10 This was pretty cool and interesting.

Count Yorga, Vampire 1970 6/10 Some good moments, but overall just okay.

The Return of Count Yorga 1971 6/10 I liked this one slightly better than the original.

The Blancheville Monster 1963 6/10 This was just alright.

All Quiet on the Western Front 2022 8/10 A technically well crafted film with some very effective and powerful moments.

Show Me Love 1998 8/10 Good performances. Story is just fine.

Lilya 4-ever 2002 9/10 A powerful, well made film with excellent performances.

The Sea Beast 2022 7/10 Animation is fantastic, story was just okay.

Le Pupille 2022 9/10 It's really well made, charming and sweet. The acting is delightful and the cast is adorable

The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse 2022 8/10 This was lovely.

My Year of Dicks 2022 7/10 This was interesting.

Causeway 2022 7/10 Fine performances, decent story.

Attack of the Crab Monsters 1957 6/10 I thought this was alright. There were some amusing moments, but it could have used more of the crab monsters.

The Tingler 1959 8/10 This was fun! Vince Price gives a very entertaining and effective performance. The screenplay is above average for this kind of film. There are some fantastic scenes. The film is creepy and spooky in an enjoyable sort of way. It's a real scream!

reply

All Quiet on the Western Front: isn’t this the 2nd time you watch it? 8.5/10

Lilya 4-ever: I am almost positive I own this on DVD. Will try to bump it up on my list.

The Sea Beast: 7.5/10

reply

Nice. Love Jackie Chan, so I might have to check out Bleeding Steel.

I'm watching the new series, Anne Rice's Mayfair Witches. Despite the poor reviews, I'm really enjoying it.

reply

It really is a movie for Chan fans because the story is all over the place!

I never heard of Mayfair Witches

reply

Haha can't wait to see it then.

Mayfair Witches is relatively new, there're only a few episodes out. Kinda reminds me of True Blood, but a little more serious.
