What did you raspberries watch this week? (07/17-07/23) CLOSED

I went raspberries picking last weekend. Nothing better then freshly picked raspberries.

I am still working only 12hours week but good news is that is a sacrifice in order to become permanent at the government of Canada come august 8th. So I just enjoy these forced, unpaid vacation and watch a lot of TV:

Blood quantum (2019 DVD): This is a zombie Canadian flick, shot in Quebec and involving Micmacs so I bought it without any hesitation. There are some short animated vignettes within the film that were really cool to look at, the violence was bloody indeed and the movie looked good for its budget but the cast was mediocre and the script was rather weak. I think Brian Tallerico from rogerebert.com said it well:
“I found myself admiring Barnaby’s editing and production skills—“Blood Quantum” looks great—but he’s not quite yet there in directing performances or writing dialogue. Everything here feels a bit too first draft or first take when the characters aren’t fighting off growling zombies.“ My rating: 6/10

Southland tales (2006 DVD): I had certain hopes for this one. Thought it would maybe be my next « Pawnshop chronicles » in the sense that it has bad reviews but looks like a blast to me. A blast it wasn’t. 35 minutes in and had still no clue what was going on or what was the point. Whatever they went for, they failed imo, this movie was all over the place. The truth of the matter is I also have to admit there were a few highlights here and there that almost made it worth a watch but I wouldn’t recommend it or watch it again. Let me put it in another way; take the 50 things you prefer to eat and then scramble them all together to make one meal. It’s most probably gonna be disgusting. That’s this movie. So much potential yet so little value for entertainment. Even the actors had no clue what the story or their characters were about, they said so in the featurette. My rating: 5/10

A knight’s tale (2001 DVD): What was it, my 4th or 5th time seeing this? First time was at the theatre I remember that. Not sure why I see it so often. Probably because it’s fairly good and easy to watch. My rating: 7/10

Minions : the rise of Gru 3D (2022 Theatre): I’m a sucker for 3D, it still amaze the child in me.I’ve seen bits and parts of the three other movies but I don’t remember seeing any of them from start to finish. So I guess it’s fair to say that I’m not a big fan of the franchise but this here was a neat little film. The kids loved it and I did too. The special effects were very nice, the pacing was frenetic, I really liked the settings and the characters and the story was short and simple. My rating: 7.5/10

Beverly Hills cop 2 (1987 TV): Although the story is lacking, we find the same fun characters, kick ass soundtrack and entertaining car chases and action scenes. My rating: 7/10

Buzzard (2014 Tubi): One main thing this movie achieved was to make me laugh out loud pretty hard. A few times. Love this kind of low budget but the pacing was slow fora late night watch and I felt like I was dozing off. A few times. My rating: 6.5/10

Against all odds (1984 TV): I don’t know what kind of script that was but it sure wasn’t my kind. Although I liked the cast and they did a good job, I just couldn’t get into it as I should’ve. Not very engaging. My rating: 5/10

The captive (2014 TV): This one kept my wife and I pretty much engage from start till finish even if the way the story was edited got us slightly confused at times. It also felt like some scenes were missing to make it whole. Nothing to take us out of the movie though. I think the relationship between the captive and her captor could’ve been richer and more credible but again, didn’t bring the movie down too much. Truly, I don’t get the Metascore of 36 and all the bad ratings this Canadian film got. My rating: 6.5/10

Man on the Moon (1999) - first time seeing this. doesn't show enough of the off screen kaufman. we don't really get to know him which may have been impossible to begin with. carrey was very good as the lead. no oscar nomination for him. 6.5/10

Time Limit (1957) - One of those movies based on a play with few sets and characters. Great performance from Richard Basehart. Manchurian Candidate takes the idea of this movie to another level 7/10

One TV series:

Sherwood (2022) - loosely based on two unrelated that take place in the same small town in 2004. i thought it was well done. some would say the bbc is taking another shot at margaret thatcher. there is a strong political element to this movie. nice to watch it as an outsider. 8/10

reply

Man on the moon: agreed. 6.5/10

Ahoy!

A knight’s tale (2001): Probably a good movie, but I had a very high fever when I watched it.

This week I watched:
Finished 'The Boys' SE03. Not as good as the first one (as usually the case with series), but still pretty kick-ass! 6/10

reply

Did you like it better than season 2?

reply

Yeah, I think I did. I wasn't keen on the Stormfront character - Soldier Boy seemed to be a better addition.

reply

I’d like to watch The boys someday.

The Terminal List: Season 1 (2022) - 8/10
The Gray Man (2022) - 6/10
The Con Is On (2018) - 5/10
The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018) - 6/10
Beyond the Gates (2016) - 6/10
Jane Got a Gun (2015) - 5/10
Sleepers (1996) - 8/10 - A rewatch

And out of the ones you watched I've seen

Southland Tales (2006) - 5/10
A Knight's Tale (2001) - 7/10
Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) - 6/10
The Captive (2014) - 5/10

reply

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote (2018): Terry Gilliam is in my top 5 fav directors. Maybe even top 3. 8/10

Sleepers: this movie shocked me as a young teen. Still effective when saw it later on. 8.5/10

A Knight's Tale: 7/10
I also saw Minions: The Rise of Gru.

Sisters (1972) - A small-time reporter tries to convince the police she saw a murder in the apartment across from hers. It was good. (79/100)

Cléo from 5 to 7 (1962) - Cléo, a singer and hypochondriac, becomes increasingly worried that she might have cancer while awaiting test results from her doctor. Definitely didn’t like it as much as I thought. It didn’t make an impact on me. (71/100)

The Vanishing (1988) - Quite good. Certain parts were more interesting than others. There are some things that happen that make you say, “Why would you do that?” The ending was a gut punch. (80/100)

The Wolf Man (1941) - This movie just really worked for me. It was done really well and had a good atmosphere. I liked it more than I expected. (82/100)

Vivre Sa Vie (1962) - Twelve episodic tales in the life of a Parisian woman and her slow descent into prostitution. I’m not sure what it was about this movie that made me like it, but I really did. It was very good. (81/100)

Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022) - I did not see this in 3D but liked it. I like the Despicable Me movies, especially 3. Minions was a big disappointment to me. The biggest issue in that one was that the Minions weren’t good enough to carry a movie on their own. Here they didn’t have to. The story and the characters were enjoyable. (78/100)

Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank (2022) - Hank, a loveable dog with a head full of dreams about becoming a samurai, sets off in search of his destiny. It got a lot of shit from people before seeing it, but it was actually good. I felt like something was holding it back from being better. (74/100)

Wolf Creek 2 (2013) - It started out decently, but as it went on I really did not like it. It became really exasperating. (56/100)

reply

Ugetsu (1953) - A tale of ambition, family, love, and war set in the midst of the Japanese Civil Wars of the sixteenth century. I was skeptical about how much I was going to like it, but it really delivered. It was really interesting. (83/100)

What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? (1962) - A former child star torments her paraplegic sister in their decaying Hollywood mansion. To be completely honest, I didn’t understand the popularity of this movie. I didn’t think it was close to being great. (72/100)

Adaptation (2002) - I had high expectations for this that weren’t reached. I thought the Kaufman parts were good but the Orlean parts were boring. Then I didn’t like where it went in the last half hour at all. (73/100)

The Magician (1958) - It had a good quality to it. I really liked the way it was filmed. I thought there was more that could have been done with the story. (80/100)

Angel Heart (1987) - This had a lot of good things going for it, but for some reason I thought it never reached its potential. Maybe it should have been better structured or something like that, I don’t know. It had all the pieces and came to a good conclusion. It just left something to be desired. And damn was Lisa Bonet hot. (77/100)

Laserblast (1978) - You know, I didn’t hate watching this. It’s badly made but I just couldn’t hate it. Maybe I was feeling generous. (59/100)

Death on the Nile (1978) - I watched the first 76 minutes in February before seeing the recent readaptation. I finished it mostly knowing what would happen. There was at least one major point where it differed. (76/100)

Ride Along 2 (2016) - The first Ride Along was a really pleasant surprise (for me). This one wasn’t as good but I still enjoyed it. I didn’t like how they pushed Tika Sumpter way off to the side...again. She deserves better. (75/100)

Bed & Board (1970) - The third sequel and second feature film sequel to The 400 Blows, which not many people know exist. (72/100)

reply

Wolf creek 2: 6.5/10

Adaptation: 8/10

Ride along 2: it’s the opposite for me; these are normally my kind of flicks but found both underwhelming. 5.5/10

A Knight's Tale - 10/10!
Great feel good movie. One of my faves I've watched at least 6x so I decided to buy it.

Beverly Hills Cop 2 - 2/10
I disliked this one.

Mine:

Age of Adelaide - 9/10
After my 4th or 5th viewing, I finally realize how campy and sappy it is, but that won't stop me from watching it a few more times.
Sci-fi + time themes = : )

On Dangerous Ground - 5/10

Sharknado 2 - 10/10
The best one. I've watched it a few times and will likely have a Sharknado marathon before summer's end.

The Boys (season 2) - 8/10
Finished watching the season this week.

This Is Us (season 5) - 8.5/10
Stopped watching years ago only to bingewatch after show ended. Only one episode to go.

reply

Haven’t seen yours. I have friends who indulge in the Sharknado movies but from the little bit I saw, it’s not for me.

reply

I looked forward to each sequel. They deserved Emmy nominations!

A lot of celebs having fun in them. Ian Ziering's ultra serious performance is classic. Al Roker's Sharknado weather reports with Matt Lauer were genius and it wouldn't be perfect camp without David Hasselhoff.

reply

I'm a fan of The Age of Adaline too. I think I like it because it's campy and sappy. I'm sure I will watch it a few more times in my life for sure.

reply

No movies last week because I was sick. Still not feeling all that well.🤒

TV Series.

-Monk - marathon
ON HOLD. I've been catching re-runs of Who's the Boss instead.

-The Bold and the Beautiful - marathon of very old episodes

reply

Hope you’ll feel better soon. We came back from a vacation yesterday and my 3 kids and I all got a gastro. Not fun. Still recovering today but feeling a bit better.

reply

Yikes! Luckily it isn't anything like that, just one week of rather bad chills during a heatwave and now I've been coughing and sniffing for another week. And these cold winds aren't doing me any favours either. I don't think I've ever been sick for that long. I hope you and your family feel better very soon as well, including your wife who's probably been cleaning up after everyone!😬

reply

have you been tested for covid?

reply

Indeed, Thank God for my wife!
