What did you raspberries watch this week? (07/17-07/23) CLOSED
I went raspberries picking last weekend. Nothing better then freshly picked raspberries.
I am still working only 12hours week but good news is that is a sacrifice in order to become permanent at the government of Canada come august 8th. So I just enjoy these forced, unpaid vacation and watch a lot of TV:
Blood quantum (2019 DVD): This is a zombie Canadian flick, shot in Quebec and involving Micmacs so I bought it without any hesitation. There are some short animated vignettes within the film that were really cool to look at, the violence was bloody indeed and the movie looked good for its budget but the cast was mediocre and the script was rather weak. I think Brian Tallerico from rogerebert.com said it well:
“I found myself admiring Barnaby’s editing and production skills—“Blood Quantum” looks great—but he’s not quite yet there in directing performances or writing dialogue. Everything here feels a bit too first draft or first take when the characters aren’t fighting off growling zombies.“ My rating: 6/10
Southland tales (2006 DVD): I had certain hopes for this one. Thought it would maybe be my next « Pawnshop chronicles » in the sense that it has bad reviews but looks like a blast to me. A blast it wasn’t. 35 minutes in and had still no clue what was going on or what was the point. Whatever they went for, they failed imo, this movie was all over the place. The truth of the matter is I also have to admit there were a few highlights here and there that almost made it worth a watch but I wouldn’t recommend it or watch it again. Let me put it in another way; take the 50 things you prefer to eat and then scramble them all together to make one meal. It’s most probably gonna be disgusting. That’s this movie. So much potential yet so little value for entertainment. Even the actors had no clue what the story or their characters were about, they said so in the featurette. My rating: 5/10
A knight’s tale (2001 DVD): What was it, my 4th or 5th time seeing this? First time was at the theatre I remember that. Not sure why I see it so often. Probably because it’s fairly good and easy to watch. My rating: 7/10
Minions : the rise of Gru 3D (2022 Theatre): I’m a sucker for 3D, it still amaze the child in me.I’ve seen bits and parts of the three other movies but I don’t remember seeing any of them from start to finish. So I guess it’s fair to say that I’m not a big fan of the franchise but this here was a neat little film. The kids loved it and I did too. The special effects were very nice, the pacing was frenetic, I really liked the settings and the characters and the story was short and simple. My rating: 7.5/10
Beverly Hills cop 2 (1987 TV): Although the story is lacking, we find the same fun characters, kick ass soundtrack and entertaining car chases and action scenes. My rating: 7/10
Buzzard (2014 Tubi): One main thing this movie achieved was to make me laugh out loud pretty hard. A few times. Love this kind of low budget but the pacing was slow fora late night watch and I felt like I was dozing off. A few times. My rating: 6.5/10
Against all odds (1984 TV): I don’t know what kind of script that was but it sure wasn’t my kind. Although I liked the cast and they did a good job, I just couldn’t get into it as I should’ve. Not very engaging. My rating: 5/10
The captive (2014 TV): This one kept my wife and I pretty much engage from start till finish even if the way the story was edited got us slightly confused at times. It also felt like some scenes were missing to make it whole. Nothing to take us out of the movie though. I think the relationship between the captive and her captor could’ve been richer and more credible but again, didn’t bring the movie down too much. Truly, I don’t get the Metascore of 36 and all the bad ratings this Canadian film got. My rating: 6.5/10
