Who was supposed to be the next big thing in music (for better or for worse), but it never happened?

Faith No More, still iconic but they were supposed to be as big as RHCP was. Now people just see them as a one hit wonder.

Ciara, not my type of R&B, but it's baffling how she never got as big as Beyoncé or Rihanna.

Dead Prez was supposed to be the next Public Enemy

Black-Eyed Peas were nauseatingly popular for a short while but the saccharine sound was pushed too hard so quickly that they jumped the shark before ever becoming established. I never hear anyone say they listen to them anymore.

reply

I consider Black Eyed Peas huge at the time, and internationally too. Also, they were not supposed to be the next big thing in the first place.

Fergie, on the other hand, fits this more. She was supposed to be the next big thing after Black Eyed Peas. It just didn't happen.

reply

Good point about Fergie. But I still say Black Eyed Peas were supposed to be the next Nirvana and that never happened.

Their biggest hit was a sample of a Dick Dale song.

Take away that riff and the song is boring as are their other songs.

Lorde.

Avril Lavigne. First album was crazy popular, then all downhill.

reply

She's huge internationally back then. I think she's got an illness or something, that's why she declined in popularity.

Jewell

Oasis struggled in the us market but had some big hits

Bobby Brown, his erratic behavior stopped him from reaching his potential.

Candlebox, band was hella underrated

Lisa Fischer, she was supposed to have been as big as Whitney. But didn't have the work ethic, and preferred to be a backup singer for the Rolling Stones 🙄😒

Miki Howard, drugs and refusing to conform to the mainstream derailed her career.

Phyllis Hyman is yet ANOTHER diva who should have been huge. But Clive Davis wanted her to adult contemporary pop music. Ms Hyman wasn't having that, so Clive went and got Whitney Houston instead. Phyllis would later commit suicide by the early 90's. What a sad ending to her.

Living Colour, I have no idea what happened here. But it's always been hard for black rock/metal acts to make it big. I remember their second album being even better than their debut.

The Eric Gales Band same as Living Colour

Fishbone, same as Living Colour. Notice a pattern here?

Paula Abdul, she was hot for like 1 album and just fizzled out. I guess technically she was big. It just didn't last long.

Jody Whatley same as Paula Abdul.

2pac was already big, but he was about to be GINORMOUS before he died.

Issues, they was supposed to be the next Linkin Park. But then the lead singer got Me Too'ed.

Sevendust, they were better than most of their contemporaries, but Disturbed was the band that ended up with all of the accolade.

Totally agree with everything here!

I'd also add Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, they was about to be the gangsta rap equivalent of Boyz II Men huge. But internal conflicts, and record disputes just kinda derailed them. Didn't help that rap music changed for the worse in the early 00's, killing their musical ecosystem so to speak.
