Ran (1985)
Rashomon (1950)
Seven Samurai (1954)

reply

I'm one of the few who didn't like Roshomon. The other two are top notch.

Red Beard would be #4 for me.

reply

Difficult choice.

Seven Samurai (1954)
No Regrets for Our Youth (1946)
High and Low (1963)

There's a lot more of his movies that I love but I think those three edge out the rest.

reply

I thought I knew every Kurosawa movie, but I've never heard of "No Regrets for Our Youth".

reply

It's a very underappreciated one.

My favorites:

SS
Yojimbo
Red Beard

reply

I've always felt that Red Beard is the one film most Kurosawa fans forget about. Glad to see it on a few people's lists here.

reply

Probably about half of his stuff still unseen by me. Some of his domestic settings confuse my western eye.

reply

It is hard to pick only 3

anyway

RashΓ΄mon (1950)
High and Low (1963)
The Hidden Fortress (1958)

reply

Yeah, he's got maybe 5 amazing films and a lot of good ones.

reply

ikiru
the hidden fortress
throne of blood

reply

I don't know three best, there's still a lot of his stuff I haven't seen. Still, I really liked these:

Drunken Angel (1948)
Stray Dog (1949)
Yojimbo (1961)

reply

The first two are more obscure Kurosawa films.
