Movies with the most upsetting endings

What are some movies with endings that really upset you, leaving you feeling bleak and dismal?

Here are some of mine:

The Mist (2007)
Night of the Living Dead (1968)
Se7en (1995)
Oculus (2013)
Boys Don't Cry (1999)
The Descent (2005)
Martyrs (2008)
Goodnight Mommy (2012)
Eden Lake (2008)
Mystic River (2003)

'Requiem for a Dream' really messed me up

reply

Good pick!

I forgot that one somehow, what a downer! Excellent movie but I only watched it once, it was way too harsh

Miracle Mile (1989) - the best film nobody's seen, probably as the end is such a downer.

A couple of horrors with pretty shocking endings -
A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)
Jeepers Creepers (2001)

Charlotte's Web (1973) - made my daughter cry.

reply

Good picks! I haven't seen Charlotte's Web in eons, and I've never seen Miracle Mile, but I remember Nightmare and Jeepers Creepers. The ending to Jeepers Creepers made me physically ill.

reply

Miracle Mile is good. As a Tangerine Dream fan it's required viewing.

Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter (2014) wasn't cry your eyes out sad, but it left the strongest impression on me as far as abysmal and bleak endings go.

reply

I'll check that one out!

reply

It's so bleak, I wouldn't even recommend it.

Oldboy (2003)
Arlington Road (1999)
The Vanishing (1988)

reply

Oh man, I haven't seen The Vanishing in forever. I really need to give that one a rewatch.

The Train (1964) is one that is really dismal since it's a "kids' glove" handling of what was unquestionably a reflection of the fate of an incredible amount of people in the final days of the second world war.

Blair Witch Project (1999). I know a lot of people don't like it, that's fine, but to imagine seeing the ends of three missing people in the first person is unsettling.

Night of the Living Dead is interesting because it's a complete encapsulation of one tiny dark corner of the world even if it's just a fantasy setting. No one will ever know the truth of those people trapped in that house.
