Is there a fancy term when you just know you won't (or will) like a film from the first few seconds?

I'm curious to know if there is a term for it. As it happens to me a lot, I can just tell somehow from the first scene, I don't know if it is the general look of the film or the vibe I get from it.

Does this happen to anyone else, or do you find yourself watching the whole film only to decide afterwards you didn't like it?

reply

No, I don't finish movies I don't enjoy watching. But also not deciding it in the first few seconds. That doesn't even enough to get through the various logos of the production companies.

I like a lot of older films but some of them have epic intro rolls, the soundtrack playing as they go through the cast and crew etc. Nothing happening other than that. Sometimes it can last for up to 10 mins I get that at the time that would have been the audience still coming in, getting drinks and snacks etc But now it is a case of hit that fast forward button. It is usually before epic type films which usually don't excite me too much once they finally start.

reply

I hate it when they do that. I'm glad they moved the cast & crew credits at the end of the movie nowadays. On the other hand, I also dislike it when they simply start the movie out of nowhere and only give the title at the very end just before the credits, if at all.

reply

It is odd or the film has started and they are showing the movie title, cast names etc as the story begins. I do think it's partially cost cutting and partially because people are more eager to just get to the point now, some may call it a shorter attention span too.

Yes, ‘Bailingoutitus’ is the medical term for immediately disliking a film
I suffer a bout of this at least once a week, if the movie is really lousy 10-15 minutes in I catch a severe case
I attempted to watch the BTK strangler movie starring Kane Hodder, that guy is an awful actor and the director must be a huge hack

The movies I instantly love I just call ‘Best Stuff Of The Week!’
I recently rewatched Jojo Rabbit and loved it all over again

Occasionally I will fast forward through a film if I am somewhat curious about the plot or something else but otherwise feel like the film sucks. Kind of like skim reading a book or reading the summary of it online somewhere!

Yeah some of the films I have watched over and over again aren't what you would call masterpieces but I love them for various reasons. Whereas some films which are considered as such have bored me to tears.

I do the fast forward thing a lot. Sometimes if I'm not feeling good about a movie, I let it run in the background while I do other things. I hope that it will actually turn out to be good and catch my attention.

reply

I do that a lot, let run and just keep an ear out or the odd glance to see if anything has improved. I also sometimes just watch it in installments over whatever period of time.

Often I find the summary's I read for films are far better than the films themselves.

Could it be as easy as "premonition?"

reply

It could be or intuition. Like when you see a shop or hear a few seconds of a song and you just know it's not for you.

I also see cast photos of tv shows in particular and I just know I won't like the show. I am dismissive but it's only tv and movies.

Dummentscheiden.
(OK, I made that up - but making a decision too soon can be a bit dumb - and I like the word google translate produced 😁)
