Man I wouldn't even know where to start lol. I've recommended lots of little-known movies on the StoneKeeper game. I guess I could repost some of them here. I'll look through my list of movies I've used, and pick out a few good ones that don't seem to be widely known.

Siberiade (1979, USSR)
Kagemusha (1980, Japan)
The Name of the Rose (1986, US)
Shahr-e Ziba (2004, Iran)
Tampopo (1985, Japan)
White Sun of the Desert (1970, USSR)
Empire of the Sun (1987, US)
The Wages of Fear (1953, France)
Machuca (2004, Chile)
The Dagger of Kamui (1985, Japan)
No Regrets For Our Youth (1946, Japan)
The Flower Girl (1972, DPRK)
Andaz Apna Apna (1994, India)
The Red Detachment of Women (1961, China)
Laila's Birthday (2008, Palestine)
It Happened in Europe (1948, Hungary)
Ocean Waves (1993, Japan)
Skanderbeg (1953, Albania)
The Return of Martin Guerre (1982, France)
Vlad Tepes (1979, Romania)
Stray Dog (1949, Japan)

I have others, but this is a decent enough list I think.

THE SECOND I SAW YOUR NAME I IMMEDIATELY KNEW I WOULDNT KNOW ANY OF YOUR SUGGESTIONS.🙂

reply

Hahaha. Well, they're all good movies and I recommend them.

UPON SECOND REVIEW OF THE LIST...I HAVE SEEN THE NAME OF THE ROSE AND EMPIRE OF THE SUN...THE OTHERS NOT SO MUCH...SOME OF THEM LOOK QUITE INTERESTING THOUGH.

reply

Glad you've seen those ones at least; few people seem to have heard of them. Which is especially surprising in the case of Empire of the Sun, given that it's a Spielberg movie starring a young Christian Bale.

I HAVE IT ON VHS.

What's "well-known" feels like a hopeless category.... but a few things that aren't talked about much as far as I know:

Adorable Menteuse (1962). The films of Michael Deville (esp. those he made with Nina Companeez), are mostly very enjoyable, but AM is a masterpiece. See also his La petite bande (1983) for some of Wes Anderson's secret sauce.
Mon Oncle D'Amerique (1980). A mostly forgotten Resnais film that's one of his best.
Angst (1983). Gaspar Noë got a lot of his style and career from this true crime-horror (I heard about it from interviews with him).
The Year My Voice Broke (1987). Forgotten Aussie charmer.
Angels and Insects (1995) & Firelight (1997). Excellent but seemingly largely forgotten revisionist 19C period films.
Mifune (1999). Dogme Rom-Com is a gem.

Morning, Sir Allaby...

Long Gone (1987), a sports movie that actually works. A minor-league baseball team in the Jim Crow south. William Peterson, Virginia Madsen, Teller from Penn & Teller actually has a speaking line.

This movie was produced and released by HBO. It is forgotten and not on any platforms associated with HBO. You can find an edited-for-music version on YouTube. Definitely a favorite of mine, and I’m not big on sports movies, as most fail IMO. I’d be interested to know if anyone could find it anywhere. My last copy was a VHS tape about 15 years ago, the tape is M.I.A. but it was becoming warped anyway.

Funny flick, wrapped up with a good ending. Not too sentimental, which is plus for me in the face of films like Field of Dreams and The Natural.

These are the ones I was going to rewatch, and are under 15,000 IMDB Votes, so not too well known.
Oasis 2002
Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase 2019
The Bow 2005
Three... Extremes 2004
1BR 2019
Joint Security Area 2000
