Se7en (1995) vs The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

which is better??

reply

Silence.

But since you compared the two, a scene with Freeman's character meeting Lector in Silence would have been interesting.

reply

It has been a long time since I have seen both but I think Seven has a better cast, Kevin Spacey, Morgan Freeman and Brad Pitt and a more famous director and is a better movie. Silence of the lambs has the more memorable character Hannibal Lecter played by sir Anthony Hopkins and was a greater influence on pop culture than Seven was.

reply

A good follow up question would be could Se7en even be made if it wasn't for the success of Silence in 1991?

I'm guessing no.

So even though Se7en is considered a good movie by most, it could be considered somewhat of a hack.

reply

Well Silence of the lambs was made after a best selling novel so it was made after a popular story so I wouldn't say it was that innovative.

reply

No I am saying that Se7en road the coattails of Silence's success.

Hollywood might have passed on the Se7en script, but because they knew how successful Silence was at the box office they went ahead with the shoot.

You could even argue the the script for Se7en was inspired directly by the movie Silence.

The Silence of the Lambs. No contest

Se7en by far.

Oh, "SotL" by far! "SotL" is a top-flight suspense film, that has an excellent battle of wits running through the whole film, as well as a race against time, and a seemingly impossible detective story! Three methods of building suspense all beautifully done, and combined into one coherent film! Surprises from beginning to end, and top performances from the entire cast, especially Hopkins. He really was fantastic, he played it just big enough to be wildly entertaining, but not so big as to be unbelievable.

I remember "Seven" as being a good film, but not one I've ever had the desire to watch again. Too much of Brad Pitt whining, and I have a very low tolerance for that lump of white bread.
