Best Performances "Against Type"

I'm sure I'll think of one later, but the first one that comes to my mind would be Robert Mitchum in "Ryan's Daughter" because he was one of the most virile men in Hollywood and plays a cuckold, and does a good, convincing job.

Someone elsewhere mentioned Andy Griffith for "A Face in the Crowd", but that was his first movie, so he didn't have a "type"

reply

Tom Cruise in Tropic Thunder.

reply

I was going to say Tom Cruise in Collateral.

reply

TOM CRUISE IN JERRY MAGUIRE...HE FINALLY DECIDED TO PLAY A HUMAN.HE QUICKLY REALIZED IT JUST WASNT FOR HIM.

reply

RDJ in Tropic Thunder 😀

reply

Charlize Theron - Monster.

Any comedic actors doing serious roles I s'pose. Like Jim Carrey in his two best movies and Adam Sandler in his three best movies. Also heard that The Office guy was real good in that Fox movie

reply

You mean Steve Carell in Foxcatcher (2014)?

reply

yis, can tell that nothing gets past you

reply

Will Ferrell in Stranger Than Fiction and Everything Must Go.

reply

I actually like Adam Sandler a lot more when he takes a part in someone else's movie that has him playing it fairly straight over the wacky roles. Punch Drunk Love for example.

reply

Mmm maybe Ralph Fiennes in The English Patient almost every time we see him shine as an actor he is portraying a bad guy but in the English Patient he did something different and did really good in it.

It’s not Oscar worthy but I also liked Glenn Close in Air Force one. Definitely an against type good performance from someone known best for her villains.

reply

Great performance.

I was impressed by Michael Douglas as Liberace. Very different from the sort of guys he usually plays.

VINCE VAUGHN SMASHING CARS AND HEADS WITH HIS FISTS IN "BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99"

reply

Any actor would be "againts type" when they brawl againts a car.

reply

LOL...THAT REMINDS ME OF THAT RICK & MORTY EPISODE WITH THE INTERDIMENSIONAL CABLE AND THE SHOW WHERE DUDES FIGHT CARS...THEY ALL PUNCH THE CAR A COUPLE TIMES THEN GET RUN OVER...

...HAVE YOU SEEN BRAWL IN CELL BLOCK 99?..ITS A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT MAN USING VINCE VAUGHN'S NAME.

reply

Yes, I've seen Brawl in Cell Block 99.

reply

I ENJOYED THE VIOLENCE.

reply

Good for you.

reply

WANNA BE PALS?

reply

The violence was goofy, especially the head stomp at the end.

reply

REMINDED ME OF ONE OF THOSE AWESOME DIRECT TO VHS ACTION EXTRAVAGANZAS OF THE 80S/90S,BUT WITH TOP TIER TALENT AND A HEALTHY BUDGET...ONE OF MY FAVORITE FLICKS OF ITS YEAR.

reply

i like every film s craig zahler has made. though that last one was a bit too long, wasn't it.

i even like that silly puppet master film he scripted.

reply

DRAGGED ACROSS CONCRETE...YEAH, I WAS STOKED FOR THAT ONE..FOUND MYSELF TRYING TO HARD TO LIKE IT..I DONT KNOW WHAT HAPPENED WITH THAT ONE.

reply

i still loved it a lot, & put it in my top 10 movies of last year. i think he's one of the most interesting film-makers out there. i just love the unashamedly reactionary feel he gets in his movies.

though i do not deny it would have been a billion times better if it had been about 20 minutes shorter.

i might re-watch it tonight.

reply

I NEED TO REWATCH IT MYSELF..I ONLY SAW IT ONCE AND IM GETTING HAZY ON THE DETAILS..THE SECOND VIEWING IS WHEN FLICKS CEMENT THEMSELVES IN MY HEAD.

reply

Puppet Master Littlest Reich was a gas. By the point at which the decapitated head landed in the toilet I was already at frame 3 of this meme: https://i.imgflip.com/23jjd0.jpg

reply

I'm pretty curious about his book, Hug Chickenpenny... I don't suppose anyone here has read it?

reply

haven't myself. i'd certainly be interested, but time is the enemy as always of course. i always have 5 books in the queue at any given moment, & more coming in than i can ever possible get to.

reply

Same, I have virtually no time for reading fiction anymore, unless it's somehow research material. That's why audiobooks are so great. I want someone to come read Hug Chickenpenny to me while I work!

reply

Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People
