Here's my submission.

I wanted to live the life of a prince
Because I thought saints were born saints
So, indeed, we didn't stand a chance

Insalubrious offshoots of nature
With heart & mind of our own
All the daughters, all the sons
Taking centuries to unearth the creature

Heralding a stage
Where consciousness is higher
Taken through a costly process
Of success & failure

I thought saints were born saints
I looked in the dirt
& found wisdom is learnt
Through a costly process
Of success & failure

Oh, wisdom is learnt

Sirens call to you as well.

I have enjoyed all of the submissions so far. I guess not a lot to add apart from that. :/

Solid songs.

Great one! I remember listening to the live version of this back in the 90s and crying.

reply

Live version much better.

One of my favorites below:

Oh, I miss the kiss of treachery
The shameless kiss of vanity
The soft and the black and the velvety
Up tight against the side of me

And mouth and eyes and heart all bleed
And run in thickening streams of greed
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go my party piece

Oh, I miss the kiss of treachery
The aching kiss before I feed
The stench of a love for a younger meat
And the sound that it makes when it cuts in deep
The holding up on bended knees
The addiction of duplicities
As bit by bit it starts the need
To just let go my party piece

But I never said I would stay to the end
So I leave you with babies and hoping for frequency
Screaming like this in the hope of the secrecy
Screaming me over and over and over
I leave you with photographs, pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and stains on the scenery
Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both of us knew how the ending would be

So it's all come back round to breaking apart again
Breaking apart like I'm made up of glass again
Making it up behind my back again
Holding my breath for the fear of sleep again
Holding it up behind my head again
Cut in the deep to the heart of the bone again
Round and round and round and it's coming apart again
Over and over and over

And now that I know that I'm breaking to pieces
I'll pull out my heart and I'll feed it to anyone
I'm crying for sympathy, crocodiles cry
For the love of the crowd
And the three cheers from everyone
Dropping through sky
Through the glass of the roof
Through the roof of your mouth
Through the mouth of your eye
Through the eye of the needle
It's easier for me to get closer to Heaven
Than ever feel whole again

But I never said I would stay to the end
I knew I would leave you with babies and everything
Screaming like this in the hope of sincerity
Screaming it's over and over and over
I leave you with photographs, pictures of trickery
Stains on the carpet and stains on Songs about happiness murmured in dreams
When we both of us knew how the end always is
How the end always is

How the end always is
How the end always is
How the end always is
How the end always is
Always is
Always is

Great song. Cash went through a lot.

Shortly after June died he died as well.

Do you guys know this is a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song btw?

reply

Johnny sort of owns this song now.

reply

His rendition definitely gives it a whole new level of gravity, I agree. And Trent has said as much too. At the same time, I can never forget the decade of listening to these words bleat out of the tortured teenage larynx of Mr. Reznor.

reply

I agree wholeheartedly. no 90’s tape case was complete without NIN. πŸ‘

reply

I fondly remember rolling thru many a high school hallway with Pretty Hate Machine, Broken, The Downward Spiral variously raping my ear canals on AT LEAST VOLUME LVL 9, and you bet your buns rockin' that Walkman G-SHOCK, baby. 😎

reply

I had to look up G Shock to see what that was. Anti skip tech, nice.
I picked up The Downward Spiral in vinyl yesterday at a record store, but no such luck on a 94 pressing. It’s a new reissue. Did you happen to see when Reznor inducted the Cure into the Rock and Roll Hall of fame? Very heart felt.

reply

Woah, I haven't. I don't know if I've ever seen any RRHoF material ever actually, I'll pull it up in a lil bit here! Man I know we're talking introspective tunes but this is making me want to throw on some of the absolute NIN face rippers... In fact I think I will do that shortly!

Every once in a while I revisit the classic NIN catalog and it increasingly strikes me how weird that music is really. Perhaps not quite so brazenly as the likes of Skinny Puppy, but considering their wider appeal, maybe even all the more so. One thing that consistently strikes me is TR's vision when it comes to production. Every time I listen I still notice something new. Did you know there are all instrumental versions of both Downward Spiral and The Fragile out there? Very illustrative of said production genius imo.

reply

No, I would love to hear an instrumental only of Downward spiral for sure. I’ll be looking it up!
