For something different I'll give a shout out to the local Aussie ladies:

Gillian Armstrong:

My Brilliant Career (1979)
High Tide (1987)
Little Women (1994)
Oscar and Lucinda (1997)

Jocelyn Moorhouse:

Proof (1991)
The Dressmaker (2015)

Sarah Watt:

Look Both Ways (2005)
My Year Without Sex (2009)

Nadia Tass:

Malcolm (1986)
The Big Steal (1990)
Amy (1997)

Cate Shortland:

Somersault (2004)

Rachel Perkins:

Radiance (1998)
Bran Nue Day (2010)

I realise folks outside of Australia probably haven't heard of many of these films, but they are all worth checking out.

reply

I've seen Somersault and I may have seen Little Women and Oscar and Lucinda. I don't believe I have seen any of the others you mentioned.

reply

Well if you were thinking of checking them out, Proof would be my pick as the best from that list. Really intriguing slow-burning thriller starring Russell Crowe and Hugo Weaving. It's one of the best Australian movies I've seen.

reply

proof is one of my brother in law's favourite films. i remember liking it quite a bit, but i haven't seen it in 25 years, & only have a few firm memories of it. i'd very much like to see it again - in fact, i'm going to add it to my watchlist and try to make a point of tracking it down this week.

Also by Gillian Armstrong ' Death Defying Acts ' (2007). Easily Saoirse Ronan's best performance in my opinion.

reply

That sounds really interesting. I just bought it on iTunes for only 2.99.

reply

Big thumbs up and hope you enjoy it.

A few female filmmakers who have been influential for me personally:

Suzan Pitt - Asparagus (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ux4VFjo9ZtU)
Maya Deren - Meshes of the Afternoon (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRLJaueDWFI)
Germaine Dulac - The Seashell & the Clergyman (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypseXIQVaF0)

Also Allaby, of all the titles in your OP I want to especially second a recommendation for Daisies.

reply

daisies is fun & weird, both things that i support. the only thing i didn't like: the scenes involving food being thrown about & the bits of loud chewing. i have a hang-up, bordering on phobia when it comes to things like that.

meshes of the afternoon is great. won't pretend to understand it, but guy maddin fans ought to love it.

don't know the other two you mentioned, but they're now on my list.

reply

I've seen Meshes of the Afternoon. I haven't seen anything by Suzan Pitt or Germaine Dulac, but all of Pitt's films are currently available to stream on the Criterion channel.

The Cake Eaters (2007) - Mary Stuart Masterson
Certain Women (2016) - Kelly Reichardt
The Runaways (2010)- Flora Sigismondi
The Safety of Objects (2001) - Rose Troche
Speak (2004) - Jessica Sharzer

reply

I've seen Certain Women and The Runaways. The other ones sound good.

The Hitch-Hiker (1953, Ida Lupino)

I've been meaning to watch this for a while now.
