Do you ever eat or drink items that have passed their expiry date.

I do all the time - I hate seeing food go to waste.

For me it would entirely depend on both how far past the date it's been and what type of food or drink it is. I wouldn't want to eat something that would make me sick like beef or fish, but if its canned goods or something like (bread, which you can just toast) I wouldn't tend to think twice about it.

The US doesn't have expiration dates, just "Best By..." and such.
I guess everyone is expected to do an at least average job of not poisoning themselves with things like botulism and salmonella.

reply

Depends on the food. Canned foods are generally okay. Old cookies, noodles or cakes I throw away even before the expiration date.

reply

I just do the look & sniff test.

reply

That will do.

Of course, those dates are usually sell by anyway. If it doesn't smell or taste off, it should be fine (excepting some more exotic foods). Of course, sometimes you're trying to figure if it's gone bad and you've got a stuffed up nose. Always best to use a pinch taster in these cases.

Within a day or two, yes. As long as it passes the smell/color test I'm fine with it. The only item that I buy at the store that is spot-on and should never be touched after the expiration date is milk. It just seems like it automatically turns disgusting as soon as the clock hits midnight on that date.

reply

I do indeed. I don't drink milk, but other dairy products and meat get sniffed and eyeballed. Bread eyeballed and squeezed. Veggies eyeballed.

reply

Drink, not so much, but food, absolutely.
