Lantern has 3 more letters?

reply

lamp is a device that generates heat, light or other radiation while lantern is a case of translucent or transparent material made to protect a flame, or light, used to illuminate its surroundings

Not smart, I just googled it.

So, a lamp is inside a lantern then?

reply

It appears so.

I always thought a lamp was something that is more stationery and "plugged in"; whereas, lantern is something that is more portable????

reply

Yah, I call it a table lamp or floor lamp, not lantern. When camping I use a lantern, not a lamp.

If you rub a lamp a genie comes out. If you rub a lantern, it's only Ryan Reynolds with his receding hairline.
