Why is everybody raving about Joe Pesci’s performance in The Irishman?

He was by far the weakest of the 3 leads, now I see why he was so hesitant to come out of retirement. People are stupid.

It's a great performance.

reply

What was so great about it?

reply

It was entertaining, compelling and believable.

reply

☝️All of this☝🏾

reply

There was nothing entertaining or compelling about it. Very standard.

reply

I loved his performance, and especially his last couple of scenes, stole the movie for me.

reply

Nope. He was great as usual.

reply

Yeah, he seemed very old and tired. Also his character was not a typical Joe Pesci character, which makes me wonder why would you hire Joe Pesci to play a serious, slow-talking, always calm guy? It could've been any old actor, Pesci brought nothing special to the table besides name recognition.

reply

Yeah I thought he was actually kind of bad, the effects work was kind of distracting and he just looked awkward

reply

Not a typical Joe Pesci character?

So he is only allowed to play psychos and comedy roles?

reply

Not that he's not allowed, but he is one of those actors you love for his typecasts. Seeing him play such an unremarkable character wasn't very breath-taking.

reply

I hate any actor being typecast. Actors are supposed to be versatile, adapt to play any role.

Granted there are those that play to their strengths, primarily because of limited ability, or that they perhaps stick to what they know and feel comfortable with.

But I feel actors should be applauded for trying something different, even if it does not always work.

However...it usually comes down to peoples personal preference...many people will only consider Pesci successful when he is doing comedy or sticking a pencil in someones eyeball.

I dont subscribe to the 'stick to what you know' theory here.

reply

There's 2 types of actors imo. Some are good at portraying vastly different characters like Daniel Day Lewis or Brad Pitt and some are loved for bringing a part of themselves into the role - Eastwood, Gandolfini and most action stars for example. Nobody ever wanted to see young Eastwood play a boring office drone who has troubles with women. Some actors are just successful thanks to their charisma more than an actual acting talent. And when an actor has that going for him, while at the same time isn't extraordinarily talented at diverse acting, I prefer to see him stick to what he does best.

reply

I get that, but I still appreciate it when an actor steps outside of their comfort zone and tries something else.

I don't want to see the same actors playing the same kind of roles year after year.

Like I say...even if they dont pull it off, i still admire them for trying.

reply

I don't get it when they do that either especially when they talk someone out of retirement.

It seems a personal project to me where the director etc want to work with some no matter what even if it doesn't suit the actors style or movie itself.

reply

sublime

reply

Joe Pesci just showed up for his name because ... look at the number of people who think he's brilliant ... hahahaha.

reply

AGREED..ITS PESCI PLAYING ANCIENT...WHICH ISNT REALLY PLAYING,HE JUST IS.

reply

I like his performance though
