Summer thunderstorms 🌩️

We just had a summer thunderstorm come through. I stood on my front steps, very close to the house, for a few minutes, enjoying the show of lightning and thunder. But after I got hit by a nickel-size hailstone I decided it was time to go back inside. Dang, that hurt. Well, perhaps 'stung' is a better description. Thankfully, it was only nickel-size, because a few minutes later the hail was quarter-size. Only a half-inch of rain with this storm, but we needed it. Temp went from 86°F to 69° in a matter of about 20 minutes.

I love summer thunderstorms! 🌩️

We had small one as well. It came after a very hot week that actually shattered records. We're not used to this heat!

reply

I know! I've been reading about the nasty heatwave in Europe. My understanding is many homes and businesses in Europe do not have air conditioning because they don't normally get this kind of heat. I sympathize.

reply

Thanks! I have a big, old fan on day and night. Tomorrow's supposed to bring some relief!

reply

My fans are nearly always on, too. It doesn't matter how hot it gets as long as I have a fan I can sit or sleep in front of.

reply

Big one here in Reno today. I welcomed it because it's been so hot. And I love the smell in the air after a thunderstorm.

reply

Ah, yes. So nice when a storm clears the air and that hot, dusty smell has dissipated.

reply

I am jealous. Don’t get thunderstorms where I live. Grew up with them though.

reply

I love 'em. Fascinating to watch.

reply

The heat is returning here on Sunday after a very fine week.

Yesterday was fabulous with a cool breeze that took away the heat and humidity. But today it heated up again. Hence the summer thunderstorm. I expect a brief respite tonight and then it's back to hot and humid. Ah, well. You can't always have what you want.

I'm decamping from the fine state of Florida after a week of family vacation tomorrow...it seems to rain everyday here in the Gulf and it's pretty interesting to see the storms blow in but it rains EVERYDAY and most of the storms are wimpy

I will be happy to get back to the New York storms that last all day and mean real business...it seems 'homier' that way...'drop your wrath once a week oh heavens!

I remember the afternoon thunderstorms when I lived in Tampa. You could almost set your watch by them - they seemed to always arrive around 4 pm. We had some real "rip-snorters." I'll never forget the time I was standing in our screened porch out back and a lightning strike hit the next-door neighbor's backyard. I literally jumped about two feet in the air when that happened. I decided it was better to go back inside the house.

I was in the Berkshires when lightning struck a large tree in the backyard of my parents' vacation home. I've never heard a thunder clap like that before or since. Incredibly loud. The tree was torn apart and we had to hire tree guys to come and pick up the pieces.

reply

I know what you mean! Almost unbelievable how loud it is.

reply

When I lived in Orlando it was almost the same weather forecast everyday.

reply

Sounds a lot like Tampa where I lived for two years.

reply

We had one in ‘Sunny’ Bournemouth yesterday.

reply

looks like Tuesday is cool down day here.

reply

We've had rain most of today so I didn't get to the outdoor chores that I wanted to accomplish. But that's okay, we needed the rain and it makes for a much cooler day. I'm fine with it.

reply

Where I currently live we had 2 thunderstorms in recent days but no measurable rain. That happens about half the time we get a storm - lightning, thunder, wind - but only a few drops of rain. I sometimes miss the lazy, slow-moving storms where there's a steady rain that lasts for hours, and an occasional clap of thunder off in the distance.

reply

Welcome to MovieChat! This is what we had today, a nice steady rain with a couple of short breaks. But it's frustrating, especially if you need the rain, when a storm moves in and you don't get any rain out of it.
