Great Movies From Terrible Books?

I hardly read fiction, and the latest one I have read (Catcher) won't be made into a movie.

This isn't exactly an answer to your question, but Scarface (1983) is a remake of Scarface (1932) which was based on a book by Armitage Trail. I haven't read it but I hope to some day.

I liked the original "Scarface" from the 1930s

reply

Believe it or not it was a book first. I didn't know either.

I didn't know that either Moose.

People usually don't adapt bad books. More examples of decent books made into awesome movies like Children of Men and Shawshank.

Time travelers wife is a shitty book...but a dam n decent flick👍

reply

Oh, I really liked the book.

I'm sure lots of people did.

Die Hard and Jaws

reply

Jaws, the novel had a pretty interesting subplot about the Mafia. I wish that they'd kept that in the movie.

reply

Did it? wow i didnt know that . and ive read it! cant tremember much about it though. Didnt Ellen have an affair with hooper?

reply

Ellen did have an affair with Hooper. He was not nearly as likeable as in the film.

I love the movie Julie and Julia, but I was never able to finish the book. I personally found Julie Powell to be a heartless individual who cared about no one and treated her husband like crap. I can see why Julia Child never wanted to meet her. Amy Adams' portrayal of her in the film is more likable. In addition Meryl Streep is always outstanding.

Jaws and The Godfather were not terrible books, just flawed but enjoyable enough

Both movies are iconic and deservedly so

reply

I was going to say The Godfather. The movie is a classic, but the book wasn't quite that good.

reply

The Jurassic Park novel isn't really all that great, IMO.
