I'd like to take a moment and...

give a BIG shout out to all first responders.
We only hear about them during emergencies but they do it everyday in many ways.

On Monday my area was hit with devestating flooding. 15 inches of rain within a 24 hr.period.
Most of it happened in a 6-8 hr period during drivetime.
Parts of the city still have standing water and some towns are completely covered.
Hundreds were stranded on the streets as the water rushed in and their cars stalled or started
being swept away. Hundreds had to spend the night at businesses because there was nowhere
else for them to go and nobody could get to them.

After all this happened only one person lost his life. Three people trapped in a car and got out
to try to get to safety. Two made it and one didn't. He was swept away. His body was found a long distance away in a field.
More rain coming tomorrow.

GF was coming home when this happened. The road washed away and she was trapped.
She was rescued by the firefighters and rescue workers and taken to safety.
She had to spend the night at a flooded hotel with many others. At least she was safe.

So nice to see people come together to help others.
People opening up there homes to strangers.
If only it didn't take something like this for it to happen.

Only 1 fatality can be attributed to all the people who rescued many, many people that night.
We don't always appreciate them until they're there helping us.
I want to thank any of you or somebody you may know who are out there doing this everyday.

Please share any stories you may have.

Glad to hear you and your people are well bud...sounds scary as hell
Those rescue/fire/police people are real heroes

reply

At least she's getting a new car out of the deal!

I often think "heroes" is an understatement for them isn't it.
Always risking their own lives. Incredible people.

I remember five days before Christmas 2013 when we had a massive ice storm and most of Toronto and surrounding areas had no power. The Ontario Hydro workers worked around the clock in bad weather to get most of the power back within 48 hours. Power workers came from New York, Ohio, Michigan and Quebec to lend a hand. Many of them sacrificed their own Christmases to get the power back. Well done.

Glad to hear you are safe and dry dewey.

reply

That's just what they do. No questions asked.

I'm out in the country near the city. All I got was a lot of rain and wind. Some standing water but gone by morning.
12 miles away complete chaos. A lot of people on this side had no idea what was happening on the other side of town
until the next morning.

reply

I remember the collective fire, that was a good response from them

Other then that you can wait a long time before they finally get to you

reply

We had one of those fires here about 10-15 years ago at a Great White show.
Over 100 people died.
Those things are tough. Happens so fast in a small area full of people.

reply

Unfortunately it does. But in this case turned out that the club didn't had the authorization to function at all

reply

all the best to those in the path of Hurricane Florence.

We just concluded the 20th anniversary of 9/11, but this is a good reminder that our first responders are out there every single day protecting us. "Incredible people", indeed.
