How Did You Become A Movie And TV Buff?

Everybody starts by dismissing movies and TV as an idle way to waste a couple of empty hours; as one matures, m and TV become an indispensable part of one's existence.
How did you all get serious with m and TV? In the late 1950s my favorite TV show was LA PREMIERE DEL MAS ALLA=THE PREMIERE FROM BEYOND THIS WORLD, which played such horror and sci fi classics as the works of William Castle and Roger Corman, FORBIDDEN PLANET, and THE TIME MACHINE.

reply

I bought some criterions because I loved movies before and I wanted to get into all the artsy ones. Never gone back

reply

Also, late 50's? How old are you?

reply

I'm a fossil as well...born 1954

reply

I was born on Saturday 18 September 1954, at 9 PM.

reply

Sometime and somewhere, during The Wizard of Oz (1939), Our Gang (1958), and Mayberry R.F.D. (1968) while watching with my grandfather as he battled cancer (he was more father to me than my own) and delighting in the sheer joy of life, the love was passed onto me.

[deleted]

Grew up in the 50's and 60's the early days of TV , and "teethed" on the old programs and movies that were on air all the time.

I was born in England in the middle of the second world war ! (I am an Ancient) My parents loved films, and I was introduced to a great variety of movies, at a very young age. (some not very appropriate too, I think) The magic of film has never left me, and my life has been punctuated by the films I've devoured through the years. Now I am not as physically active as previously, films are still colouring my days with pleasure. Films and Music !!! Very fine things.

reply

Imdb. It made me curious about films. I learned to exam them, make theories and find trivia.

reply

Good question. My story is quite simple. For years I had pretty decent DVD collection (around 600) and I always loved films but I prefered drugs, girls and alcool to cinema. But then I got married, had two baby boys and settled down like a good man. So now, it's family, work, movies. And then alcool. Just kidding. Sort of. But anyways, in 3 years my life long collection got to 1450 movies. Over 100 of them I haven't seen yet. It's cool because it's like I had my own videoclub at home. In the past year only I knocked big titles of my watchlist. (Ex:The good the bad the ugly, Apocalypse Now, The thing, Once upon a time in the west, Incendies, The magnificient seven, Close encounters of the third kind, Deer Hunter...)

reply

Wow, 1450? You sound like my middle daughter. She learned early on not to loan her's out, or she'd have to replace them. Some people just don't care how they treat other people's stuff.

reply

And I thought my 486 DVD collection was big...lol! Actually, I think I'm past 500 now...haven't done a count lately. Anyways, I loaned 2 DVD's (Insidious & Sinister) to a friend around Oct. of 2015...he never gave them back! So, I said "screw it" and bought replacements. NEVER again will I loan ANYthing to ANYone again! I just don't understand how people can do stuff like that and then face you as if they've done nothing wrong. Well...they DID do something wrong...they stole from me! I had this happen with other stuff in the past too. I just have to stop being so nice.

reply

LOL, no, not really funny, but I've so many books WITH my name written inside the cover with the date I bought them, and wrote them down before loaning them out, never to return. The DVDs came back scratched or icky with whatever it was, so no, no more loaning. But I can't help it when someone asks. I've just got to keep my mouth shut and not talk about books or movies anymore, except here!

"I just have to stop being so nice." Yep, me too, but it isn't in my nature. In the past month I've let my 2 backdoor neighbors borrow a shovel, a hachet, another shovel, a ladder, and a chainsaw *sigh* One shovel has returned.

reply

Yep...that's a LOL that I understand well, my friend. 😉

My grandmother used to do the same thing with her books too only she stamped her name in them...and she had 100's...and never loaned them out...she was wise. Most of them were not appropriate for kids so she would always tell me to ask her permission should I ever want to read one. She was strict about keeping me sheltered as long as possible. But, when I turned 13, the Exorcist came out and I REALLY wanted to see it but she saw it first and told me it was too bad for me to see. Well...she also had the book...do you see where this is heading?? 😉

No...actually I never snuck the book to read it...at least not HER book...someone loaned me their copy and I read it in my bedroom...in private and then returned it to it's owner in 3 days...hehehe. I loved it! Made me want to see the film even more! That finally happened in mid 1974...me and some friends managed to sneak in and watch that film instead of the one we paid for...lol. 😉

When my grandmother passed away in May of 1975 (I was 4 months shy of 15), I took her copy of "The Exorcist"...ohhhhh the irony! To this day, I still have her book with her name stamped in it. I have know idea how I've kept up with it all these years, I've moved about 20 times since then. It IS falling apart a bit...the front cover fell off and is torn in half...it's very frail, like cloth, but I can tape that up. Paperbacks...they just don't hold up well. But I just think that's a little ironic that out of all the books she had, I would end up with the one she didn't want me to read most.

I know what you mean about, "It's not in your nature", about not being nice, I was going to say the exact same thing about myself. I'm not nearly as nice as I used to be back in the early 80's. I've had some really rough relationships and a rotten society to harden me up a bit. Sometimes I can be harsh with people when I don't mean to be. 😩

Ooops! Sorry for rambling, I get that way when I'm tired...lol.

Anyways, I really hope you get all your tools and stuff back, those items aren't cheap! 😲

reply

When I was a kid, my grandpa made a mistake of pointing at several books from his book collection and saying "Don't read those books, they are not suitable for children". Needles to say, those books he pointed at were the first books I've ever read, at night with a flashlight hehe

reply

LOL Apis! I did plenty of sneaking around but never was really much of a reader so I guess that's why I didn't get into her books. I just wanted to read "The Exorcist"! Thanks to my friend at school, for loaning me her book, I got to read it and never got caught! My grandmother never knew I had read it back then and she never will...which is kind of sad because of the reason WHY I could never tell her. I would've told her when I was of age but she left me before I got that old.

reply

At least you knew what book you wanted to read and took necessary steps to read that exact book (Exorcist). I on the other hand just read random books that were pointed to me as unsuitable, just for the heck of it. I remember reading Moravia's The woman of Rome that way, with a flashlight, when I was like 8 or 9 years old. Way too young, I didn't understand much, but I read it cover to cover. lol

reply

I know right? Of all the things I could've taken of her's to remember her by, I take the very book that she absolutely didn't want me to read! It was like a "forbidden" item. If I had more time, I would've taken something much more important but I had to fly to Texas with my mom, after the funeral, to live with her only to end up going to Louisiana a few months later to live with my dad. Louisiana was were I finally got to see "The Exorcist" at the theatre. What a disaster my life turned out to be after my grandmother passed. After nearly 42 years, I still miss her dearly.

Oh the things we did as kids when we were told NOT to do them...lol! 😄😄 Did you ever re-read "The Woman of Rome" when you got older and able to understand it just to find out what you didn't understand the first time?

reply

No, I never re-read that book. I did re-read one other book that grandpa pointed at, many years later, and only then I realized that all the books he pointed had prostitution in them.

Stupid, I know, the things kids do hehe

reply

Yep...kids will be kids! 😉

reply

Nice story about you grandma's book. I, too, managed to keep stuff for over 20 years and I don't know how I still have them. I lose most of the stuff I own normally...

reply

Thanks Stone. I've lost a lot of stuff through moving a lot...and people stealing from me. But...for some odd reason, that book has always remained with me. It's all I have left of my grandmother so I cherish it more and more as the years go by.

reply

I don't annoy easily with the rambling. I love to hear it, unless I ask a question which requires a direct answer. I have a habit of saying "I didn't ask you that..I asked you.." whenever someone goes around the world first. It sounds rude to anyone not use to me. But otherwise I really really enjoy hearing stories and usually ask others to tell me. I'm not nosy, just curious about people. Sooo, thank you for 'rambling away', StyxNyx. I enjoyed it very much. 😊

reply

Awwww...thanks neverstandinalone. 😊 I know exactly what you mean about when you ask a question and wanting a direct answer. I usually ALWAYS answer a person's question right off the bat, then I might ramble AFTER that. I think it's kind of rude for people to put THEIR story first and then, maybe, answer your question 10 paragraphs later. And, just like you, after I get an answer, I'm always interested in hearing other people's stories about their lives too, they're fun to read and helps me to know them better. So, thanks again, and I'm glad you enjoyed my story. 😊😊

StyxNyx, I understand the frequent moving. All total marked on my map are 31 places from the age of 18, and now (the 32nd) I'm back for good in the house where I grew up (my g'parent's home left to me while my actual home next door). I, however, pack so good and tight I'd thought about starting a moving company, and haven't lost a thing.

Ah, the love of grandparents. It's sad the elderly aren't as valued now like they once were.

Boy, did we get OT. I had to scroll back to see what OP had asked. It's all in getting to know each other though, isn't it?!?

reply

Yeah, I hate moving, it's such a hassle! I've had my stuff in one storage place after another and have accumulated more and more stuff throughout the years. I'm such a pack rat too...lol! I'm in my hometown now, in California, have been for over 30 years, but things are getting waaaaaay too expensive so I'm planning, hopefully, just one more move to Washington (state) to be near my little brother. It's much cheaper to live there and the rents are only half the price of what I'm paying here in Cali. Wish you lived closer, I would hire you to help me pack! 😉😃

I know what you mean about our elderly's, people haven't got the same respect, if any, for them like back in the older days. My grandmother and step-grandfather raised me for a better part of my life so I considered them as my parents. I adored them so much and miss them both dearly! I was always very respectful of them and tried to always mind my P's & Q's. I got into harmless mischief, but what kid doesn't? All in all, I was a pretty good kid that grew up in the 60's and 70's and had a pretty decent childhood.

Yes, we sure did get OT, didn't we!? We're like waaaay out in left field...lol! I just scrolled up to see what the OP was too. 😉 But, absolutely! It's all about getting to know each other and having fun doing so. I'm enjoying that a lot! 😄👍👍

reply

I wish I was close enough too. Ya can't get a credit card between anything I pack, and I've NEVER had anything break or get damaged.

My last move back home (I kept my house) was from Washington. I giggled when you included (state). It became a habit to say "the state" online or in person to differentiate from Washington D.C. I lived in an extremely small beautiful town, on a hill. One thing you Must remember is to say hill, and not mountain ⛰️, unless of course it IS a mountain like Rainier, Helen, or Adams (I lived smack dab in the middle). They're sensitive to the fact up there. I still have all my places in Wa. pinned on Google maps since we have friends and family there. There is no other place on earth (that I've seen at least) that is more beautiful or greener. It is ☔️☂️🌬️ alot.

Funny, you mentioned it's cheaper than where you are now. That's the one thing I couldn't get over..the prices. They're much higher there than where I am. We do plan on another road trip back soon. We tried to make the 2700 miles every 6 months to see family here while there. America really is quite beautiful.

I grew up in my house (not 50') from my grandparents so when the sun came up I was with them. Mom would either ring the dinner bell, or call and tell my g'mother to send me home for the night. They did raise me. I consider them my 'real' parents, hence them leaving me their home, and all their things. I miss them so much it hurts (he in '68 & she in '10).😭

Yep, OT, but I don't care for now. I won't give too personal info though. Ya never know what could be used for ill purposes. I only let people know what I want them to know.😉

ps. so we don't get into trouble I guess we could continue in a PM if/when Jim decides to implement.

reply

Yeah, you're probably right about continuing in a PM so I won't leave a response to all this just yet, but I really enjoy talking with you. 😃 I hope a PM will be one of the new treats he's adding when he merges and completes all the boards here soon. Keeping fingers crossed! 😉

Dwam!

reply

Haha, I also loaned Once upon a time in Mexico to a close friend but then he stopped calling me and never answers. He lives a bit far too. Been over a year now...

reply

Same here, StoneKeeper. I figured they needed the books more than I do.

reply

Yep, it's like they think it's ok to never return stuff cause they're "your friend". Often times, they're the worst thieves around! They take advantage of you more.

reply

I was born in '71 and along about seven or eight years old I started to hear about some new "Home Box Office" thing and we got this new cable television thing with a slide clicker and I would just sit and binge on movies on HBO. A couple I remember in particular, The Elephant Man (I obsessed about this one around age 10), My Bodyguard, Somewhere In Time, etc, I would just watch 'em over and over.
