Saddest movie ever?

If anyone likes sad movies they don't get much sadder than this one.

The Elephant Man without a doubt, and it does it without ever slipping into mawkishness.
The first time Hopkins' character meets Merrick, that's how you do emotional cinema.

I'll throw Au Hasard Balthazar in the mix.

Hello Burningfire78,
I'll throw in these two - maybe someone else has listed them already -
When Andrew Came Home - has lots of touching scenes
The Champ (remake, 1980) - ditto; especially the last minutes are so heartwrenching...!
Kind regards

The correct answer is Hachi; A Dog's Tale.

Hi folks,
what's your opinion about The Perfect Storm (2000)? I think this one has such an overall depressing feeling; you know in advance that disaster will come, inevitably; and the soundtrack further adds to the dark and somber atmosphere...
What made me especially sad when I watched this one is the fact that tragedies like this one actually do happen - even nowadays, with all the modern technologies available which the sailors and fishermen of "the old days" never had: Still the Ocean is stronger than men, sometimes...! Perfect Storm is based on real events, isn't it?
Kind regards
