But that’s the problem. Vicky nails it - there’s no heroes journey, and that’s what Star Wars always was. I concede that Rey might just be naturally better, but it’s a deeply unsatisfactory and lazy explanation. It’s boring because there’s no journey, no story. I believe the vast majority of fans demand more.
Instead he thought about the people around him instead of attacking those against him.
I like that. Ties in with when Rose broadsided Finn to save him and said much the same thing - we win by saving those we love. What I don’t get with Poe though is why he wasn’t immediately thrown in the brig and court martialled for disobeying direct orders That might be more plausible. Recalling the scene in TLJ, the impact does happen at the point of entry into hyperspace, so at least part of the cruiser mass would have still been in real space. I also think that Holdo probably had no idea if it would work but just tried it out of desperation. Nope. Han explains to Luke in ANH that “travelling through hyperspace ain’t like dusting crops boy! It takes precise calculations or you’ll fly too close to a Star or bounce right into a supernova, and that’d end your trip real quick”. Thus, a ship in hyperspace can collide with objects in normal space He did?! I don’t recall that ... did he say it to Qui Gon? Even so, he’s a child who didn’t know the actual name of the weapon, so merely described it as he saw it.Luke is no child and is very well aware of the correct name, which before now he has used consistently. Now he suddenly calls it a laser sword for no particular reason? Doesnt make sense, like many things in this movie. In Lucas’ defence, apparently there were technical and possibly financial issues with depicting Kashyyk and Wookiees convincingly, so he had to change it to Ewoks. Interesting idea but it seems unlikely, as Krennic was not shown to be a Force user or Force sensitive in any way. I’m afraid not. The words are never uttered by any character in the OT. It is always referred to as a lightsaber. It’s possible that laser sword appeared in the scripts or something, but no character ever said it. Indeed. The Porgs are proof positive of this. They serve no plot purpose whatsoever, they exist purely so Disney can sell toys. Then he pranked us all indeed. 😡 Absolutely. Star Wars is not Star Wars without the iconic scores of JW. Nah, it’s all good mate 😊 Happy to have a reasonable conversation. Might learn something. I accept the prequels as canon, but midichlorians are an unnecessary explanation that detracted from the mystical nature of the Force. The Force was originally based on the Tao (light/dark side being analogous to yin/yang), so a pseudoscientific explanation was unwanted and unneeded. Also, if midichlorians are accepted, it would be theoretically possible to inject oneself with midichlorians or to undergo some form of gene therapy to increase your Force awareness or power, or turn a non-Force user into a Force user. There is no evidence that either of those are possible. Everything in Star Wars suggests the opposite. Fuck midichlorians. That is all. Actually, you make some good points here. No, I’m not the same person I was 30 years ago, and I had forgotten about Luke giving in to anger and hate to try to strike down the Emperor. Thanks. So Luke having a brief moment of weakness is plausible. I guess I, like other fans, had an expectation that Luke would be a sage-like, supremely wise Jedi master like Yoda and Obi-Wan were. Exactly. All they needed to do is adapt Thrawn trilogy. What does God need with a starship? Oh, nvm, wrong franchise ... 😆 Thank God, someone gets it. Also note how all of the leadership of The First Order is conspicuously male. I find I have to agree. Lucas shouldn't have sold it. He could have "allowed a new generation of film-makers" to make new Star Wars films but still have retained ownership and control. Agreed. What shocks me though is that TFA is actually a better movie than this one, notwithstanding that it's essentially an ANH remake as you say. This one had a lot of style over substance. TFA at least had an actual story, and at least Han never did anything out of character (cf. Luke considering murdering someone in their sleep or turning his back on the galaxy like a coward). And couldn't agree more about Disney not respecting the source material. I knew this the moment they declared that the entire (massive) corpus of expanded universe material was now non-canon.
