Why does the term "Uncle Tom" refer to a black who is a sell-out?

In the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, Tom risks his life to save the life of a little white girl, refuses to whip a slave and as a result is tortured, then gives his life to protect a black woman from being a sex slave. So how is he a sellout?

Because he is a devout Christian he does forgive the white people who killed him, which I think is odd, but he is a devout Christian.

It's like people who use the term as a slur haven't even read the Cliff notes /Spark notes/Wiki/ etc. of the book.

That's part of the plan: the less people that understand the term "Uncle Tom", the better. People can then use it as an insult towards blacks that go against the narrative without using the N word.

I don't expect the woke who watch this film to read the book UTC, or understand who Uncle Tom actually was.

reply

"The woke"... That's as funny as "beaner" or "sand nigger" and completely inappropriate! WLM!

I have no idea what your response means

An episode of The Jeffersons dealt with this very topic.

After seeing this thread, I am going to echo the OP's question "Did you ever educate yourself by watching the clip and/or reading Uncle Tom's Cabin?"

reply

I've never read it but from what you've said Tom sounds a pretty noble guy.
