Who is Marie? (Flashback sequences)

Marie as played in flashbacks by Mariela Garriga.

She was killed by Gabriel's (Esai Morales) character before Ethan was even in the IMF. Who was she? Why did he kill her? Was she ever mentioned or alluded to in previous films? Is there any information on this or will it only be revealed in part 2?

She’s never mentioned or alluded to in any of the previous films and we’ve never seen anything from Ethan’s life before joining the IMF until this film.

Thanks! That's what I thought but wasn't sure if I missee something.

I know the film is getting great reviews but I don't like when filmmakers do this. Suddenly he's deeply troubled by something that has never been mentioned even once in the numerous other films. And Gabriel as well as his arch nemesis is magicked out of nowhere.

Shea Wigham's character also appears out of nowhere and he too has a grudge against Hunt.

Think it's kind of lazy writing in my opinion.

Huh? Why does Shea Wigham’s character need justification? He’s like the Russian detective in “Ghost Protocol,” a guy whose purpose is simply to hunt Hunt. No backstory needed.

Gabriel didn’t need prior appearances. I can easily imagine him pulling off small time crimes to remain under the radar. In a sense, Esai Morales is the Hollywood version of Gabriel: a contemporary of Tom Cruise who’s worked steadily in supporting roles and TV shows, remaining low key compared to Cruise.

But it makes perfect sense that he’d emerge as the Entity’s avatar in this film — Luther said it outight: the entity chose Gabriel precisely because it wanted to mess with Ethan.

And while we’ve never had Hunt’s backstory, the notion that he, like Grace and like Luther, was once a “gentleman thief” is neither inconsistent with his character nor implausible, given how much of his career has been spent as a rogue agent anyway.

Likewise, while Benji seemed like a harmless nerd in MI3, it’s become clear, especially in “Rogue Nation,” that he’s also got a rebellious streak, suggesting that, like Luther, he was a criminal hacker at some point in the past.

It's more of an "oooh, THAT explains it" sort of thing rather than, "where the hell did THAT come from"?

Didn’t bother me none
