Universal’s Monkey Man kept steady toward a $10.1M opening, after a $3.58M Saturday, -15% from Friday/previews. If ya think about it, even though this much grittier than any Bollywood film as we know it, it’s on the high-end of where movies for Indians audiences typically open. As a point of reference, Animal, which was a big bloody Hindi action movie last year opened to $6.5M. Typically the audiences for Bollywood movies come out in the first weekend and then fall apart in weekend 2.

What's the budget?

reply

$10 million budget apparently.

The action is quite impressive but there isn’t much of it.

Yeah, I’m hearing that it’s more of a slow-burn than a slam-bang action movie. Almost sounds more like Drive than John Wick.

Monkey Man opened in 3,029 North American theaters, an average of $3,340. It is primarily in English. This week, the local AMC theater cut half its shows and the audience has dropped, apparently from weak word of mouth.

The Hindi language Indian movie, Crew, opened in 487 theaters opening weekend and did $1.5 million in North America, $3,086 per theater. It was a much better movie, an unpredictable plot with three female protagonists, and good twists and turns. So Monkey Man's revenue is primarily because over 3,000 theaters showed it.

Theater operators could make a lot more money if they carried more Indian films, with a one or two week commitment. They often make $8K to $10K per theater on opening weekends for well received films.
