Have seen it happen but not often.

Having said that, if that scene had have been in the latest episode (05), it likely would have fitted in better as it was the Halloween episode, so going off to see a midnight screening on that day would seem more likely, seemed it was 2 episodes early (now in hindsight).

Used to happen in Ft.Lauderdale… but that was years ago, I don't know.

These writers need to be up on their pop culture. They had the little kid dressed up as Ziggy Stardust.

Definitely still a thing in big cities. If you pick up them indie counter culture newspapers, they let you know what weird little movie theaters you didn't know existed are still doing it.

Actually, there’s been a few by the local theater here that they do with a pub crawl. They just did one last weekend. The population was 8,500 in 2010.
