I really like this show because it is clever ... but

I have a couple things that really bug me about.

First, it is clever and has a lot of humor and pathos.

What I don't like is that, does anyone really pine away like that for someone once their spouse has died. As I watched the series the videos that he had of his showed him being a mean, callous asshole a lot of the time. His wife put up with his garbage, so maybe that is why he misses her.

Then there is the gratuitous inclusion of a lot of really disgusting "humor". Particularly coming from a psychiatrist, or psychologist - but with no real point or connection to the plot arc ... if there is a plot arc. On the one hand we are supposed to think this is a show that loves and respects women, on the other hand there are these what are really just caustic comments from men about women all throughout the show.

This is the first show that really got me thinking about how they basically do anything, project anything, as long as there is that hook to it that makes you nervously react or taught. It's like driving by a car-crash, you don't want to look but you don't want to miss anything either.

TV and media has gone from being something that used to be positive or socially reinforcing to something that is just all about mapping people's behavior so they can make better ads and manipulate us better.

Now that I have watched this show, I don't know what to think of it. I sort of like Ricky Gervais because he comes off as smart and funny ... and basically positive ... but that ... THAT is the real show, the fact is that everything we see at almost every level or media is planned and there for a reason - just like in the news.

We ought to all be getting really sick and offended by all this garbage. Still, there must be something we think of value because we watch the lousy stuff?

Interesting contradiction.

Two sides to every coin.

Sometimes you hit home runs Brux, The psychiatrist was ridiculously over the top and out of place in this show. No way the guy would have a single patient. Not only did he provide no help to his patients, he was repulsive. Every scene he was in was brutal and stupid and I could see that even though I didn’t comprehend half the slang obscenities. And I had a very hard time remembering there was this deep relationship between Tony and his deceased wife when every other vignette from the computer showed him pouring water on her or smashing cake in her face or embarrassing her in front of other people. It got to the point where I couldn’t see any reason for her to be in love with such an ass. I have to say I was impressed with Gervais acting skills. He played a grieving husband very convincingly

I only saw the first year (and I'm not sure I saw all of that), so I didn't see any of the mean things he did. There was nothing about it that made me want to watch a second year. I could sort of see where it was going, so there was no point.

Gervais DID channel grief beautifully.

Totally agree. I’m in season 2 and when you binge watch, it really is the same story over and over each episode. I’m not sure how he got three seasons out of it. It would’ve been an ideal 2 hour movie
