Is Moff Gideon a Sith?

Or does he just carry that light saber around because it looks so cool?

I mean, the guy obviously does like swanning around and looking cool.

reply

You have a keen eye for style don't you Karen?

reply

The man comes as close as possible to embodying all that is STYLE, while wearing an Imperial uniform.

Which he makes look very stylish.

reply

It's possible he is force-sensitive like Chirrut in Rogue One, so he has aspirations of being Sith-like (or delusions of grandeur). He made a frowny face when Luke arrived, so maybe he sensed him? Or he was planning on injecting the blood into himself, in hopes it made him sensitive.

reply

That sounds like something he'd do, after making sure it was safe on his test subjects of course. Try to inject himself with the treatment to become Force sensitive. But right now he clearly isn't. His fight with Mando would've been the time for Gideon to use those abilities if he had them. You don't need to be a Jedi to use a lightsaber - just have good swordfighting skills.

reply

Doesn't appear to be.

reply

Yeah, but he can do some damage with a light saber, and look too cool for words while doing it! Which is almost as good as being an actual Sith!

I love him, he's a great villain character.

reply

Agreed, he was a good villain in season 2, would've liked to see him fleshed out more though. Didn't really get to fully understand his motivations, hopefully next time.

reply

He was ready to shoot himself in the head. I think maybe he's a true believer, who subscribes to the same kind of ideas expressed by that officer in the last episode: people think they want freedom but what they really want is order. He refers to Bo-Katan and her friends as murderous savages at one point. So I think he actually does see himself as the good guy, and even his more brutal actions as necessary and serving the greater good. Gideon is a zealot who believes in the Empire. And zealots are always dangerous people.

reply

When was he ready to shoot himself, when it was clear that he'd lost and would be the prisoner of a full-blown Jedi with psychic powers as well as the ability to kick ass?

I think the attempt was more to spare himself the horrors of captivity and being broken than any belief in cause he served, unless I've got it all wrong because I've only seen the episode once.

reply

He doesn't seem that weak that he'd opt for the easy way out just to spare himself pain. He was trying to protect the high level secrets they could extract from him. If he was a coward, he could've just offered that information in exchange for his life - but he didn't even try that approach.

reply

I don't think it was taking the easy way out to escape pain, so much as to spare himself a battle he knew he couldn't win. Maybe. It's pure speculation on my part, he could have been done that to benefit the Imperial cause, to spare himself pain and humiliation, to go out on his own terms rather than accept defeat, he didn't say.

All I really know is that I love the character, and that Giancarlo Esposito is AWESOME!!!

reply

He always plays a really fun bad guy!

reply

If I can't have my beloved Palpatine, I'll take him! Nothing more fun than a really great villain!' And he is a great villain, totally oily and hateful, but someone that isn't totally out of reach of Mando and his pals. Put them up against Vader or a real Sith and they'd be screwed, but someone like Gideon... bring it on!

The producers learned a lot from R1 and what made it work, and one of the things that made it work was providing a villain that everyone can love to hate, but who is more or less on the same level as the heroes.

reply

Good points, agreed, things do seem to point to that. I'd like to better understand what is he using the blood for? Recreate the Emperor? Enhance himself? Super Force soldiers? Who does he report to? So many questions since he wasn't fleshed out enough in Season 1 or 2.

reply

Growing midichlorians in the lab so they can be injected into him, and he can actually *become* a Sith rather than just looking like one?

reply

You don't have to be a Jedi or Sith to use a mele weapon in the Star Wars universe. He's good with a sword, but showed NO Force abilities whatsoever.
