Alternate ending...huh?

For those who haven’t seen it, the two main characters switch places and she is the one who remembers Harry Potter but he does not. How does that make any sense? Is it supposed to signify that the rest of the world knows about those books and movies but he has amnesia, or she is the only one? I don’t get it and I’m glad they thought better of using it.

Actually that would’ve been cool. Then we would think about what other things the world knew and he didn’t. Would’ve been thought provoking!

But I think he is supposed to be an audience surrogate, carrying all the same cultural memories we have.

SlackerInc, that's a good point ... we might identify with Jack just a tiny bit less

Meanwhile it doesn't improve the story at all to have Ellie remember Harry Potter

I like the alternate ending better. It's more thought-provoking, who's to which universe is the alternate one?. The only thing wrong with it is that it doesn't work with the running gag of the Google searches.

It does if she is the *only* one who remembers. It could be possible that during the timeline of this film (6 months) she has not mentioned Harry Potter to anyone or missed any references to it. Then she becomes the millionaire author.
