What was Glass waiting for in prison? (spoilers)

He was in prison / an asylum for 19 years. This film establishes that he has super intelligence.

Why didn’t Glass escape before then?

He was studying, learning and planning

Elijah was a superhuman genius, smart enough to know he wasn't being held by ordinary jailers

But for all his ability, he was still up against a millennia-old conspiracy; he needed to wait for just the right moment to create his "origin story."

And do what? He had a serious health problem, and it would make it almost impossible to hide. He has to have a helper take care of him, so that's two people living on the lam. More than that, he knew he had to wait for the emergence of a super villain to go to the next stage of his plan. If he was hiding in a 3rd world country or some other remote area, he can't be in the center of things nearly like he can being in the same city as David.

Extreme patience is one of his 'super' powers. Like the other powers in this trilogy they are on the borderline of being 'super' / realistic.

Nelson Mandela spent 27 years or so in prison waiting for the world to provide his escape, if that makes sense. It does make sense to me. The thought of being able to show the world one day that 'super' people exist probably kept him going, as the thought of a changed South Africa kept Nelson going.

One thing that doesn't make so much sense to me is the Secret Society apparently been going for 10,000 years. That was the one clunker in the movie for me, doesn't make sense at all to me.
