$20 million budget?

So all of the recent articles I've been reading put the budget at $20 million. Box Office Mojo is also reporting a $20 million budget. That really seems quite low to me.

Earlier estimates I have read say $40 million, which definitely sounds more reasonable to me (though still low). I mean, shit, the budget for Unbreakable was $75 million ($108 million adjusted). And now he's going to make its sequel for $20 million?

First, if $20 million really is the budget, then the actors must have agreed to substantial cuts from their usual rates and be truly doing this one out of love. Second, I think we need to expect a film with a relatively small scale and focus.

A $20 million budget worries me. Can M. Night do what he needs to do with that kind of money?

Manny would not have moved the script forward into production if he doubted his ability to deliver his desired final product. As for his and the stars' salaries, it's highly possible that Manny, Willis, Jackson and McAvoy agreed to lower upfront pay in exchange for a portion of the box office returns. For a film this highly anticipated, that might prove a lucrative decision.

Well I hope you're right about that. I'd hate for it to be a situation where he just said, "Well, I got $20 million to make this movie so I'll just do the best I can." I really want it to be a winner.

And you might be right about everyone agreeing to a cut of the box office. That would make a lot of sense, actually.

This business model is becoming increasingly adopted across the industry. The recent Halloween was made for around $10 million, but with the superb box office performance Jamie Lee Curtis stands to make more than the initial production budget. It's an effective way to lower the upfront financial risk and give major talent incentive to attach themselves to a project.

I was going to say the same as Fred -- Also, this movie seems to be saving money by largely having a single set, the mental hospital, and basic FX.

I desparately hope the mental hospital is NOT where most of the movie takes place. That sounds dreadfully dull.

It does seem very low, but he did make Split with only $9 million.

reply

Yes, but Split was a small-scale film that would've been a disappointment if it had been billed as a sequel to Unbreakable. I think most Unbreakable fans are hoping for something that feels as epic as possible, though I'm just not sure how epic you can get on $20 million.

As I said in the OP, adjusted for inflation Unbreakable's budget was over $100 million. It's just crazy to think that M. Night made this sequel on just 1/5 of that.

I agree.
