When time travel becomes a reality....

When time travel becomes a reality, how will it be controlled, if at all? Will it inherently be a question of cost? meaning, available only to those who can afford the technology, like (the still elusive commercial) space travel?

reply

So is it time travel or matter manipulation?

reply

I'm not a quantum physicist, but I think it's time travel, since it's the human interaction with matter that the would-be traveler wants to change.

I've done quite a bit of looking into time travel as I have a horrific fear of death(Or not really death) but The certainty that the moment I die I will then enter eternal NOTHINGNESS, which for me is The absolute most horrifying and Haunting thing imaginable

and while I completely admit, I'm not an expert or have any qualifications....I feel pretty certain in saying your question is pretty much pointless as Time Travel will almost certainly never exist or could never exist in the way your question implies.

from what I've read Time Travel Backward is pretty much impossible....and any Time Travel forward would involve "Time Manipulation" using Gravitational Time Dilation.

Which This ^ would in no way be what you are talking about...

IMO The kind of time travel you are talking about(The kind that is in most movies) using a device to pin point a specific time either in the past or future is pretty much Impossible

Now I cant say its impossible as a complete fact, Because Is hasnt been Proven impossible, but just because something hasnt been proven impossible, doesnt mean its possible either.

I feel safe to say, If Time Travel because becomes possible even in the slightest, It Will be through Gravitational Time Dilation where we can only go forward in time....

but I also feel safe to say, theres almost no chance of this happening either, because I do not believe Human's will still be around in the time that would be required to advance to That Technological point...

In conclusion, for me, Time Travel is basically Fantasy...I do not believe its even possible to achieve it in the form that Your Question and Most Movies have it, and I dont believe its possible for Human's to achieve Time Travel in the form Gravitational Time Dilation, which IMO is Possibly the only way that some sort of time travel is Possible....

again I'm no expert...these are my opinions based on research Ive done due to a Horrific fear....

Consider the following: if it were possible to bring a human being from the 11th century to the present day and observe the person's psychology as he/she sees the world in the present day, you would find that he/she would not be able to cope psychologically and would either go mad or have suicidal tendencies. Why? The missing mental evolution. The year 3019, is beyond the scope of our imagination, but it is at least conceivable that concepts such as alien contact, interstellar travel, 5th dimension awareness, and more importantly, time travel will all be trivial. So yes, you are right, it will not unfold the way Hollywood conveys it, but you had better believe, time travel will come to pass. Why the certainty? Because ideas that we humans cogitate on (or obsesses over) always come to pass.

In terms of your fear of "nothingness" after death....How does a drop of water feel when it returns to the ocean? Individuality is a human concept, which the universe that created you does not share.

Obviously BOTH everything I am saying and you are saying are opinions and theres no possible way we can know but No I strongly disagree

I do not believe even if Human are still in existence in a thousand years we will have even come remotely close to alien contact, Time Travel or Interstellar travel on the level that would be needed

first I believe Technology would have advantaged almost unimaginably in that time, Honestly who knows where we would be but The facts+forces behind alien contact, Time Travel or Interstellar travel are so astonishingly Mind Boggling Not even in a thousand years would we be close

for example, if we somehow discovered how to travel at the speed of light(which may very well be impossible for humans) the nearest galaxy is 25 Thousand Light Years away....we would literally have to travel for 22 Thousands years at the speed of light just to make to the nearest galaxy that may possibly have any earth life planets that could produce life

The Pure Size of the Universe is almost incomprehensible(for me its one of the Hardest things to even imagine)here is an amazing video explaining the possible size of the universe, the last 3 minutes of the video is mind shattering in illustrating the possible size of the universe-https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iy7NzjCmUf0&list=RDIy7NzjCmUf0&start_radio=1

secondly, Im not convinced Humans Will still around in a thousand years(Possible) but IMO not likely, I'm entirely convinced Technology and our own advances Will lead to Humans extinction or earths inability to abstain life...

now I c In terms of your fear of "nothingness" after death....How does a drop of water feel when it returns to the ocean? Individuality is a human concept, which the universe that created you does not share.

^^^

This is a good thought...

But what haunts me more is the Thought.....

does it bother me the universe and time existed 14 Billion years before I existed?

do I fear the 14 billion years of "NOTHINGNESS" that happened before I existed? No

this should comfort one, Its concrete proof,I'll never actually have to face my biggest fear of NOTHINGNESS.

I'll never even know I died or have slipped back into nothingness, The fact that All that time did in fact happen, Literally 14 BILLION years of time went by without me even noticing or realizing it, Proves the exact second I die, I will never actually realize it or will never actually have to face my biggest fear, there Will never be a point where I realize "IMO it happened"

This comforts some people, For me it haunts me and terrorizes me even more....knowing that I'm heading directly toward this fate and theres not a MIND on earth that can avoid it, Literally HAUNTS Me....the thought of Eternal NOTHINGNESS, literally never even being able to know your dead for all eternity and never being able to exist again is PURE Horror for me....

Trying to comprehend eternity is the worst and most horrifying part....trying to imagine that in 999 Trillion Years from right now, I'll still be NOTHINGNESS, all that time will have taken place and past...I'll be complete non existence, Never to be made or exist again, and that 999 Trillion years, Isn't even .0000000000000000000001 % of eternity....

I watch a lot of atheist and theist debates, eventually The Theists always resort to using the ultimate "Threat"....what if your wrong? what if your wrong about there being no god, why would you take the chance of going to hell?

for me, This isnt a threat at all, I would Gladly chose an eternity of Hell over the absolute HORROR of the inescapable Fate of Eternal NOTHINGNESS that I'm heading toward

anyways,...again Obviously everything i'm saying is just my opinion, I'm in no way trying to be mean or state my opinions as facts...I love having convos like this, hope you dont take anything I'm saying personally

PS...

if you watch the video I posted and let me know what you think about the ending and "The Light Bulb"....this was astonishing to me, and really struck home the unimaginable scale and size of the Universe/Cosmos

Admitting our ignorance is the first step in acquiring knowledge. - Socrates

We can study the stars until we are blue in the face, we will always be ignorant (ants) in the universe.

The ONE and ONLY obligation you have as a human being is to enjoy your life to fullest of your ability. I suggest you do that.

reply

Like we don't have enough problems. If ANY of the theories presented by any movie dealing with time travel (including ENDGAME) tell us anything, is that if we ever perfected it, someone would screw it up and change everything about this world, if not this universe. Watch the movie A Sound Of Thunder. Changing anything in the past might change every thing in our present, possibly to a devastating degree. Despite cinema's penchant for happy endings, I don't think screwing with our history would have a good result.

reply

it's impossible anyway, just like flying into a black hole was in interstellar

reply

Agreed. Fortunately it won't be possible, I believe.

reply

Time travel is just a pipe dream. It just does not and will not exist.

Firstly, time and how we measure time is a man made construct. We invented the clock, seconds, minutes, seconds etc. We created different time zones around the world.

Second...think about this basic little conundrum...
If time travel exists, let's say you go back 100 years and kill your grandmother. Therefore, you never existed.

So...who killed your grandmother?

reply

So...who killed your grandmother?

Believe it or not, you are not the first person to posit that conundrum.
And why is it always the grandparents?
what do time travellers have against their grandparents??

reply

Why do people think the fiction of time travel is possible? It's fun to fantasize over and all, but it is no more possible than vampires existing, or talking dogs, or any other made up stuff. We can always pretend (dress and act like a vampire) but that doesn't mean it is a real thing. Just fiction. Like time travel.

HarlemEagle42 is closest: matter manipulation. Atoms move about, but "TIME" is a man made concept and doesn't even exist outside our designating it with our counting.

The gravity/time thing is wrong too, but that is a discussion for another thread ;)

reply

I agree its not possible , in the way the movies depict it . But time is a real thing , and is affected by speed , or gravity , or mass or something ... ask the physicists

reply

theory is just cozy fiction until proven. gravity slowing down "time" (or speeding up others?) would affect atomic decay of OUR atoms negatively. its fun fiction based on fictional theory and unknown flaws in atomic clocks, but no one is slowing down, speeding up or de-aging or any of that. its nice to wish though.

There is a time machine orbiting the Earth. I wrote about it here

reply

I think time travel has already been invented, but we will never find out because the few scientist who managed to created it,chose to never told anyone, because if only them knows about time travel, they can change their life and the world like they want. Something that its way better than glory.

reply

just because one scientist ( or group) chose to bury the invention doesn't mean its a closed book.
Whats to stop another group inventing it? the patent office?

reply

You are right, thats why i said "scientists" using the plural. I think every scientist that makes this discovery, eventually realizes that if he/she keeps the secret,he basically becomes the ruler of the world, and we cant even realize it. This could take eventually to a fight between the different scientists who invent the time machine...sounds like an interesting plot for a movie!

reply

I think thats basically the plot of "Primer" :)
a top class "technical" time travel movie
