What if they didn’t run? (Spoilers)

When the team discovers the bodies in the woods, Vaughn and Marcus run.

What if Vaughn and Marcus didn’t run?

By running, they 100% revealed that it was them.

What if they had stayed and pretended to be shocked at the bodies?

The family has some hunches that it was them — the way they went out late the night before, and the way Marcus said “they” when he heard the nephew was missing. But those hunches are not enough, right?

Running away is the act that gave them away.

Movie was trying too hard to just make progress move along....

If a movie didn't progress or "move along", it would look like it was on pause or something.
Every movie, book, song, etc. has to move along.

Having two people attempt to escape what they assume would be vigilante justice by running off into the woods doesn't seem like it's "trying too hard" at all.
If anything, it seems more like two people attempting to escape vigilante justice by running away.

They knew that the town already suspected them. That's why they were asked to help search, where they were grilled with some more questions of their whereabouts. Yes, at this point, the town isn't 100% sure, there is no proof. But if the bodies are discovered, the townsfolk will definitely crank up the questions, and probably step up to straight accusation. Marcus ran due to instincts, he knew he couldn't hack the interrogation, not confident in his own composure or acting skills. When Marcus ran, the jig was up, Vaughn had no choice but to follow. Also, If they didn't run, then you have a TV show, instead of a movie. LOL!
