Disney was smart not to mimick Robin Williams

I’m not sold on Smith either. But this is Disney. You know they exhaustively tested and ran through algorithms-a-plenty with Will. So I will reserve judgement. But there was no real way to do justice to Williams. So I agree with a new direction.

*Maybe* they could’ve made Genie CGI and used Robin’s outtakes and lines from the original (apparently there’s hundreds of hours of outtakes). Smith just feels a little worn-out, though.

Indeed. Replicating what Williams did would not have been the right thing to do. Would this had even been expected? Maybe. I’m all for a new direction, though.

As for Smith, he wouldn’t have been my 1st choice but I’m not opposed to his casting. I fully understand why they chose him! He can bring the right amount of charm and energy necessary for this role. In other words, he was cast as Genie because he is Will Smith! Lol. And I have no problem with the way he looks, either. Whilst his CGI will need some work, his overall design is, frankly, just how I envisioned a “live action” genie would look like.

At any rate, I’ll also reserve judgement until I see the whole thing. A glorified tv spot and people already have the entire movie and its effects all figured out (well duh, that’s humans and the internet 4 ya).

Anyone and everyone is smart not to mimic Williams. Williams himself would have been better off not mimicking Williams.

It's easier than that.

You know that the genie couldn't be a white male, probably neither an Asian male, since the genie is a very positive character. Remaining options? A white chick, a black dude, an Hispanic dude.

First option: a white chick. It should have become a feminist genie, probably joining Jasmine and making her an independent woman who can beat Aladdin and prove him to be an useless man... BUT, since Aladdin was a diverse cast, that would be politically incorrect. Dismissed.

Next option: an Hispanic dude. Perhaps with some strong Caribbean accent, that could make the genie very 'sabrosón' and funny....BUT, that could be considered like stereotyping Hispanic people. Dangerous waters. Dismissed.

Next option: a black dude. Since black characters in modern days are basically filling the archetype 'charming, serious, deep and courageous', there isn't many black comedy actors anymore: Chris Rock, Tyler Perry, Will Smith and perhaps somebody else. They picked Will Smith.

No need for big algorithms. It was quite straightforwards.
